o Microsoft Launches Advertising
Technology Research Unit
Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft plans to launch a search
advertising platform called adCenter by June in the U.S., which will
replace the sponsored ads on its MSN sites currently being served by
Yahoo's Overture Services. The company also announced the creation
of the adCenter Incubation Lab (adLab), which will join advertising
research efforts at its Washington-based adCenter and Chinese
research lab. The adLab is developing technologies to deliver ads
through video, TV, mobile devices and the Internet, using methods
like paid search and contextual advertising. It is also developing
tools to gather comprehensive demographic information on users, such
as social network mining, so that advertisers have more information
when targeting their ads. "The Microsoft team of top researchers in
this field is unsurpassed and certain to produce compelling advances
that will impact and ultimately change the game in online
advertising," said Tarek Najm, general manager of adCenter at
Microsoft. "With this long-term applied research, we will continue
to help improve advertisers' return on investment by delivering rich
audience intelligence information and enabling simple and complete
control over all aspects of the advertising campaigns."

o Apple's
Trademark of "Mobile Me" Hints at iPod Phone, Mobile Services
San Francisco - Apple has trademarked the phrase "Mobile
Me," prompting some to speculate the company may be planning to
introduce an iPod phone or other mobile content services, Reuters
reported. "We believe this is further indication of (Apple's)
strategic direction to extend its iPod + iTunes and Mac franchises
into new business areas including smart phones, value-added mobile
content services, and the broader consumer electronics space," said
American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu. The trademark
application, filed on Jan. 5, covers areas including computing
devices, mobile devices, and mobile services including digital
music, video, games, e-mail, and messaging across Internet,
intranets, extranets, television, cellular, and satellite networks.
Apple recently partnered with Motorola to put its iTunes software
onto cell phones, and some have speculated that Apple plans to
become a mobile virtual network operator, leasing network space from
an existing mobile network to sell as its own mobile phone service.

o Florida
Senate Takes State Video Game Sales Ban a Step Closer to Law
Tallahassee, Fla. - The state of Florida moved a step
closer this week to passing a statewide ban on the sale of "ultra
violent" video games to minors, with the passage of a bill in the
Florida Senate Committee on Commerce and Consumer Services. "Left to
their own devices, children often do not realize the harm they are
causing themselves through the exposure to graphic sexual and
violent content found in many of today's video games," said Senator
Alex Diaz de la Portilla, sponsor of the legislation. Lawmakers'
efforts to crack down on the sale of violent games to minors have
been consistently struck down as unconstitutional restrictions on
First Amendment free speech rights by the courts, which have
overturned similar laws in the states of Washington, California,
Illinois and Michigan, as well as in St. Louis County and the city
of Indianapolis, Ind. Along with Florida, lawmakers in states
including Delaware, Indiana and Maryland are working to enact game
sales bans. Efforts to pass a federal ban are being spearheaded by
Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), who recently introduced the Family
Entertainment Protection Act.

and Sky, among others, and listen to more than 50 digital radio
stations. The incumbent operator has invested somewhere in the

o New iTunes
"Mini-Store" Raises Privacy Concerns
San Francisco - A new feature of the most recent update
for Apple's iTunes application is brewing controversy, over its
ability to send data on what songs are in each user's personal media
library back to the company, according to published reports. The new
"MiniStore" window -- which may be turned off by users --
automatically brings up data on selections available from its iTunes
Music Store when users browse their own music collections, which
generally contain CDs they purchased offline and then ripped to
their computers. Computer experts told News.com the software also
transmits data that links a user's unique iTunes account ID to their
musical preferences.

CNET News.com: Over 200 Firms Now Making iPod Accessories
San Francisco - CNET News.com on Friday reported on the
burgeoning market for iPod accessories, which are taking up no small

jumped into the market early, they now compete with over 200 other
firms crafting over 1,000 accessories, such as cases, FM
