o Sony Acquires Game Developers Red Zone Interactive, Naughty Dog

Foster City, Calif. -- Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced
on Monday that it has acquired game developers Red Zone Interactive and
Naughty Dog, Inc. Financial terms of the transactions were not disclosed.
Santa Monica-based Naughty Dog created the "Crash Bandicoot" racing game
for Sony's original Playstation console. San Diego-based Red Zone is a
developer of video games including the 989 Sports "NFL Game Day" series.
Red Zone will maintain its current 65-member staff and offices. The
company was founded by members of the in-house development team for the
now defunct Sony Interactive Studios America. "We are proud to rejoin the
company responsible for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system,
which we believe will revolutionize the future of not just videogaming,
but also home entertainment," said Red Zone president Chris Waley. Sony
said the company will continue to develop exclusively for the sports
catalog of its Playstation and Playstation 2 game consoles.

o IBM "Superdistribution" Software To Offer Security For Peer-to-Peer

Cannes, France -- IBM announced enhancements to its Electronic Media
Management System (EMMS) software on Monday that will allow the secure
distribution of music and e-books on a peer-to-peer file-sharing network.
The "superdistribution" feature lets content owners stipulate to whom an
MP3 or other file can be distributed, and what rights the recipient has to
play or further distribute the file. It can also impose geographical
restrictions on media files. The superdistribution software -- which has
the potential to impede users from sharing files on other networks like
Napster -- will work with San Diego-based MusicMatch's Jukebox or
RealNetworks' Real Jukebox. "For digital distribution to succeed as a
business, content owners need to be compensated for their intellectual
property," said Dick Anderson, general manager, IBM Global Media and
Entertainment Industry. "EMMS' security features and new superdistribution
capabilities are designed to meet these needs." Companies including record
label BMG, music distributor Handleman Company and Japanese wireless firm
NTT DoCoMo currently use the EMMS software.

song exchange. Fans who purchase the band's upcoming album -- which will
include proprietary software from Santa Clara-based InterTrust -- will be
able to insert the CD into a computer and download software from the disc
that let them access the free music in the file-sharing network. The
downloaded software is in the form of a player that dictates where files
can be distributed.
