o Verizon to Appeal Ruling Ordering Subscriber's Identity Revealed to RIAA

Washington -- Internet service provider Verizon has announced it plans to
appeal a U.S. District Court Judge's ruling on Tuesday, ordering the
company to turn over the identity of a subscriber to the Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA), which subpoenaed the information
because it believes the subscriber is distributing copyrighted music on
file-sharing systems. Verizon refused to comply with the subpoena because
it believes "the alleged infringing material must actually reside on
Verizon's system or network for the subpoena to be valid." "Verizon is not
attempting to shield customers who break copyright laws," said Sarah B.
Deutsch, vice president and associate general counsel for Verizon. "[This
ruling] opens the door for anyone who makes a mere allegation of copyright
infringement to gain complete access to private subscriber information
without the due process protections afforded by the courts."

San Jose, Calif. -- TiVo, a manufacturer of digital video recorders for
television, announced on Tuesday the resignation of its president Morgan
Guenther at the end of the month. The reason for the departure was not
provided. TiVo said it has already initiated a search for a senior
executive to oversee the business development areas that are managed by
Guenther.

announced on Wednesday the release of its source code for sending
streaming media over the Internet, as part of its plan to offer the
technology for free to create a universal standard for streaming media.

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Zoom Culture, a producer of digital video content for
the Internet and television, has shut down after four years of operations,
during which time the company raised about $20 million of venture capital.
The closing has put about 40 employees out of work. The company's
television show "Hip-Hop Nation," which was developed in cooperation with

o Game Developer Eidos Again Delays Release of Lara Croft Sequel

London -- Eidos, a U.K.-based video game developer, announced that it will
once again delay the release of "Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness," the
anticipated next installment in its best-selling Lara Croft series, this
time until early in the fourth quarter. The game was originally scheduled
for release in October, to catch the 2002 holiday shopping season, but its
release was then delayed until February. Eidos said the game "will benefit
from continued game play enhancement, which will require further time."
"Whilst the release of "Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness" has been
delayed, we believe that the game will benefit substantially from the
marketing of the new Lara Croft movie, "Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life,"
scheduled to be released this summer," said Eidos CEO Mike McGarvey.

o Report: Two-thirds of U.S. Broadband Homes Using Home Networking

Dallas -- One-third of all U.S. Internet households have a PC located in
the same room as their primary home entertainment system, according to a
survey of 10,500 Internet households by Dallas-based Parks Associates. The
survey also found that two-thirds of broadband homes with a PC collocated
with their primary home entertainment system already have a home network
in place. "Instead of waiting for consumers to buy "media-center" PCs to
link PC-stored content to TVs and stereos, vendors should offer solutions
such as digital media adapters that leverage co-placement of these devices
right now," said Parks Associates senior analyst Michael Greeson. The
study included surveys of 4,500 narrowband and 6,000 broadband U.S.
households.

is akin to blaming the highway department for creating roads that are used
