o Microsoft Launches Long-Awaited MSN Search Engine Service

Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft on Tuesday launched its long-awaited search engine service, and announced plans for a massive ad campaign to promote the new MSN Search as a better alternative to Google and others. MSN Search will replace former partner Yahoo's search listings; Microsoft did not say if it will continue to use paid search listings from Yahoo's Overture Services past 2006, when the contract expires. Available in 10 languages and 25 countries, the service allows users to target searches to the Web, news, images, music, desktop or Microsoft's Encarta online encyclopedia. A search for a recording artist, song or album in the U.S. will return links to song samples and the ability to purchase and download tracks from MSN Music. The company plans to promote the new MSN Search with an ad campaign it expects to reach 90% of U.S. consumers and several hundred million others globally, including ads during the Super Bowl and Grammys. "This built-from-the-ground-up version of MSN Search provides an infrastructure that enables us to rapidly innovate and give consumers precisely the information they're looking for, no matter where it's located," said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of the MSN Information Services & Merchant Platform division at Microsoft. Currently, Google provides 34.7% of all searches, followed by Yahoo (31.9%) and MSN (16.3%).

o Movielink Wins Summary Judgment in USA Video Patent Dispute

Santa Monica, Calif. -- Movielink, an Internet-based video-on-demand service joint venture between a number of Hollywood movie studios, announced on Tuesday that it has received a favorable ruling in a patent infringement suit brought by USA Video Technology Corporation. The U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware granted Movielink's motion for summary judgment against USA Video, which sued Movielink in April 2003 claiming the company infringed on its "system and method for a user to request, and have delivered over an electronic network, a digitized video program." Connecticut-based USA Video provides businesses with streaming video and video-on-demand delivery technologies, and holds several patents on such technologies. "We vigorously defended against the USA Video infringement claims because we knew that Movielink was not infringing its patent. We are pleased, but not surprised, that the court has agreed with us," said Movielink CEO Jim Ramo. Movielink is a joint venture between MGM, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros.

o TiVo President Yudkovitz Resigns Two Weeks After CEO

Alviso, Calif. -- Just two weeks after the resignation of CEO Mike Ramsay, TiVo, a maker of digital video recorders, announced on Tuesday that Marty Yudkovitz has resigned as president of the company. Yudkovitz, who joined TiVo in May 2003, was on a list of potential candidates to succeed Ramsay as CEO, but said he resigned to spend more time with family. The company did not announce immediate plans to replace Yudkovitz, while Ramsay said he will stay on until a successor can be found. "It looks like both the CEO and president are saying, 'We've taken the company as far as we can, and let's find somebody who can take TiVo to the next level,'" April Horace, an analyst at Janco Partners Inc., told the Associated Press.

"Officially, we don't condone the activity," Chad Kime, director of marketing for anime distributor Geneon Entertainment, told News.com. "We do admire their enthusiasm and love for our products, and we're grateful when 90 percent of the fansubbers, once they know titles are licensed, do pull them from the Internet."
