o Google Quarterly Earnings Soar Past
Wall Street Expectations
Mountain View, Calif. -- Shares of Google shot past the $200-mark
in Tuesday's after-hours trading, after the search engine giant
reported quarterly earnings per share that topped consensus Wall
Street estimates by $0.10 a share. Buoyed by an upturn in online
advertising, the company reported a seven-fold increase in net
income, $204 million compared with $27 million a year ago, on sales
that doubled to $1.03 billion. Earnings per share of $0.87 topped
estimates of $0.77, according to a survey of analysts by Thomson
First Call. Shares were up more than 6% in after-hours trading.

o MP3.com
Founder Michael Robertson to Launch New Music Venture
San Diego -- Michael Robertson, the founder and former CEO of
MP3.com -- which posted over a million tracks from independent
artists online -- announced on Wednesday plans to launch a new
digital music service that will focus on interoperability and
consumer choice. The new venture, MP3tunes, will offer a hardware
device, software products and an online music store available in
coming months. "When I started MP3.com, the term 'MP3' was an
obscure acronym recognizable only by geeks," said Robertson. "Today,
certain market forces are trying to drive consumers away from MP3
towards proprietary systems, which lock out some consumers and force
everyone to buy a particular company's player or software program. I
wanted consumers to have more options, so I felt compelled to
reenter the music space to bring the limelight back to MP3."
Robertson said MP3tunes' first product will be an online music store
featuring high-quality downloads in MP3 format, free from any
digital rights management protections. Since selling MP3.com to
Vivendi Universal in 2001 for $372 million, Robertson has founded
companies that offer a Linux operating system and VoIP services.

o Dept. of
Education Posts Online Database of Accredited Online Schools
Washington -- The U.S. Department of Education has launched an
online database that contains the names of online schools for higher
learning that have received accreditation by agencies recognized by
the federal government, in an effort to combat the growing number of
fraudulent online schools. Such "diploma mills" defraud both
students of their investments, and prospective employers who are
misled about applicants' qualifications. The new online database
lists the names, addresses and enrollment of all accredited online
universities and schools. "Obviously diplomas become a growing
concern as the internet has made it easier for these schools to
proliferate," Education Department spokeswoman Jane Glickman told
Wired News. "The department has no direct way to shut them down, but
we want people to know what's a legitimate school and what's not."

o Game
Publisher Ubisoft to Add 1,000 Jobs, Invest $565 Million in Montreal
Montreal -- French video game publisher Ubisoft announced on
Wednesday that it plans to create 1,000 new jobs within its Montreal
division, with an accompanying investment of up to $565 million over
the next five years. The Montreal unit has been responsible for
developing titles including "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell," "Myst IV
Revelation" and "Prince of Persia." "We've grown by 50 per cent in
the last 14 months alone, we already have over 1,000 members in our
team, and I expect we'll double that number by 2010," said Martin
Tremblay, CEO of Ubisoft Montreal. "Montreal was competing with
cities in Asia, the U.S. and Western Canada for this investment."
For its part, Quebec is expected to provide over $46 million in
grants, subsidies and tax credits to Ubisoft by 2010.

Mobile Game Publisher In-Fusio Acquires German Firm Mobile Scope
Bordeaux, France -- In its second acquisition in a week, French
mobile game publisher In-Fusio announced that it has purchased
German mobile game publisher Mobile Scope, following on its
acquisition of U.S. publisher Thumbworks. Financial terms of the
transaction were not disclosed. The deal gives In-Fusio control of
Mobile Scope's roster of titles, which include mobile games based on
the films "Die Hard" and "Ice Age," and increases its worldwide
staff to 250. "In six years, In-Fusio has become one of the world's
top three mobile game publishers and has built a unique position in
connected mobile game services," said In-Fusio co-CEO Giles Corbett.
"Just after the purchase of Thumbworks, the acquisition of Mobile
Scope perfectly matches our strategy to deliver entertaining content
for mobile phones and services dedicated to players communities."

o Report: Cable
Internet Telephony Subscribers Jump 900% in 2004
Boston -- The number of North American subscribers to Internet
telephony services provided by cable TV providers jumped 900%
between 2003 and 2004, from less than 50,000 to nearly half a
million, according to a report from Boston-based Infonetics
Research. This growth mirrored an increase in spending on VoIP
(Voice over Internet Protocol) equipment by cable firms from $63
million in 2003 to $123 million in 2004, and an overall 26% increase
in the number of cable broadband subscribers, to 22.4 million.
"Investments were up sharply in 2004 as more MSOs either began
trials or introduced commercial offerings to a wider market," said
Kevin Mitchell, directing analyst for Infonetics. "Although the
number of cable VoIP subscribers is still fairly small and two MSOs
made up over 90% of that subscriber total in 2004, we expect the
penetration of VoIP service delivered directly from MSOs among cable
broadband subscribers to increase from 2% in 2004 to 15% in 2007."

Arts to Ship "The Godfather" Video Game in the Fall
Redwood City, Calif. -- Electronic Arts announced on Wednesday

and contribute to the game's development. EA was also granted rights
from Marlon Brando and conducted a voiceover session with the actor
before his death last July. The non-linear action-adventure game
will be released for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Sony PSP and the PC.
