o Sony to Launch $249 PSP Handheld
Video Game in U.S. on March 24
Foster City, Calif. -- The anticipated Sony PSP handheld game
system will go on sale in the U.S. on March 24 for $249, Sony
Computer Entertainment America announced on Thursday. The company
will offer a slate of 24 launch titles, priced starting at $39,
including "Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix," "Metal Gear Acid,"
"Dynasty Warriors," "Need for Speed Rivals," and a number of sports
titles from both Sony and Electronic Arts. Sony's PSP Value Pack
will include a 32MB Memory Stick Duo, headphones, a sampler disc
containing movies, music and video games on its proprietary 1.8GB
Universal Media Disc (UMD) format, and, for the first one million
shipments, a UMD video disc featuring the Sony Pictures film,
"Spider-Man 2." Sony said it will manufacture one million PSPs for
sale in North America by March 31, adding that it has already
shipped more than units to Japan, where the PSP went on sale Dec.
12, and saw an initial 200,000 unit allocation sell out on day one.
Sony plans to ship a total of 3 million PSPs worldwide by the end of
March.

o D.C. Mayor
Backs Ban on Sale of Violent Video Games to Minors
Washington -- The mayor of Washington, D.C. and a majority of
D.C. Council members want to ban the sale of violent and sexually
explicit video games to minors in the District, The Washington Post
reported on Thursday. A group of 12 council members, led by Adrian
M. Fenty, intend to introduce legislation that would impose fines of
up to $10,000 and threaten the loss of business licenses to
retailers who violate the ban. "They are unbelievably misogynistic
and geared toward making whoever is playing perpetuate the worst
parts of our society," Fenty told The Post. Similar bans on the sale
of mature games to minors in St. Louis, Indianapolis and Washington
state have been defeated in the courts, while additional bans have
been proposed in both Illinois and Michigan. "We oppose any
government enacted restrictions on content as unconstitutional
restraints on creative and artistic expression. Further, Federal
Court rulings already struck down limitations like what Councilman
Fenty introduced and the same fate awaits his proposal," said
Douglas Lowenstein, president of the Entertainment Software
Association, a video game industry trade group.

o Napster
Offers Unlimited Transfers to Portable Players for $15 per Month
Los Angeles -- Napster on Thursday announced the launch of a
digital music rental service that will let users transfer an
unlimited amount of songs to their portable music players for $14.95
per month. The Napster To Go service utilizes Microsoft's "Janus"
copy-protection technology for portable devices, and will only allow
users access to portable songs while they remain subscribed to the
service. The main drawback is that the service will not function
with Apple's iPod, which currently commands 65% of the portable
player market. The launch will be accompanied by a $30 million ad
campaign, including Super Bowl spots, that will tout "Works with
Napster To Go" alliances with device makers Creative, Dell and
iriver. Consumers who purchase new digital music players from these
makers will receive a free one-month Napster To Go trial
subscription.

o Hollywood
Entertainment CEO Quits Amid Bidding War for Company
Portland, Ore. -- Hollywood Entertainment, which owns the
Hollywood Video chain of movie rental stores, announced on Thursday
the resignation of chairman and CEO Mark Wattles, amid a bidding war
for the company between rivals Blockbuster and Movie Gallery.
Hollywood appointed company president F. Bruce Giesbrecht to the
additional role of CEO, but did not name a new chairman of the
board. Separately, Blockbuster announced that it has upped its bid
from an initial offer of $11.50 per share for Hollywood, adding $3
in Blockbuster shares for a total bid of $14.50 per share, or $991.6
million. Alabama-based Movie Gallery, the nation's third-largest
video rental chain, has also bid $13.25 per share for Hollywood, and
said on Thursday that it remains confident that its offer has a
better chance of passing antitrust muster than does Blockbuster's
bid. Hollywood said it is still considering Blockbuster's bid, and
advised shareholders not to act until it issues an opinion on the
best course of action, expected to come on or before Feb. 17.

Redwood City, Calif. -- Video game publisher Electronic Arts
announced on Thursday that it has completed its previously announced
purchase of 3.5 million shares of French publisher Ubisoft, for a
price of about $89 million. Ubisoft executives had previously said
it had held no talks with Electronic Arts, and considered the
purchase of a 20% stake as "hostile." Separately, Redwood City,

o Online
Gambling in U.K. Increases by 566%, Report Says
London -- According to a new study by 888.com, a U.K.-based online
casino, the total number of people gambling over the Internet in the
U.K. has increased by more than six times over the last 12 months.
The survey of more than 2,700 people found a remarkable 566%
increase in the amount of money staked online since the end of 2003.
The study also found that about 20% of U.K. women visit an online
casino or betting websites more than once a year, a massive increase
compared to the 4% registered in the early 1990s. Earlier this week,
888.com announced that its international membership had increased
from 2.7 million in 2002 to more than 13 million as of this week.
Many analysts are expecting the company, owned by Gibraltar-based
Cassava Enterprises, to become the next online casino to list on the
