o Nokia to Introduce Video Game/Cell Phone Hybrid Device

London -- Mobile phone maker Nokia on Wednesday plans to unveil a mobile
phone that doubles as a handheld gaming device, a multi-billion dollar
market dominated by Japan's Nintendo, Reuters reported. Nokia's first
product, called N-Gage, will be similar to Nintendo's Game Boy Advance,
the top-selling mobile gaming device on the market. Nokia will begin
publishing games for the device on "wafer-sized memory cards," with Sega
coming on to publish a "Sonic the Hedgehog" title for N-Gage.

o Internet Relay Chat Network DALnet to Ban File-Sharing

San Francisco -- DALnet, an Internet relay chat (IRC) network that has
been online since 1994, has told its users that it will soon ban
file-trading on its network, Wired News reported on Tuesday. As of March
1, chat rooms on DALnet dedicated to file-trading will be prohibited;
about 300 music and 50 movie-trading rooms were active on Tuesday. "What
it comes down to is that DALnet is an Internet relay chat network, and not
a file-sharing network," DALnet's chief operations officer, who is known
as MirclMax, told Wired News. "There are plenty of other places people can
go to find/trade files. DALnet is the place to go for people who want to
chat."

o Hearing Scheduled in Verizon, RIAA Dispute Over Subscriber Identity

Washington -- U.S. District Judge John Bates has set a hearing date of
February 13 in a dispute between Internet service provider Verizon and the
Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Verizon has appealed
Bates' ruling ordering it to turn over the identity of an alleged music
file-trader to the RIAA; the company has also petitioned for a stay of
Bates' Jan. 21 order. The RIAA has until Feb. 7 to respond to Verizon's
request for a stay, and then Verizon has until Feb. 11 to submit further
comments.

o TiVo Ups Price of "Lifetime" Membership to Program Guide Service

San Jose, Calif. -- TiVo, maker of personal video recorders that let
viewers pause and record live television, has raised the cost for
purchasing a "lifetime" membership to its service -- which automatically
updates TV program listings -- from $249 to $299. The fee covers the
"life" of the actual device, not the subscriber, and averages about four
years, according to the company. The price hike is likely an effort to get
consumers to opt for its more lucrative $12.95 monthly service.

(Los Angeles) The Los Angeles Times on Tuesday reported on "The Sims
Online," the much-hyped online version of the top-selling PC simulation
game from Electronic Arts that has thus far seen lackluster sales and
reviews. Since its release in December, 105,000 software units were sold;
of these, 80,000 played the 30-day free trial, and now only 40,000 of
these are actually paying the game's $10 monthly subscription. Electronic
Arts is now working quickly to change the online game, adding or removing
elements based on feedback from players. "Do I wish we shaped the
expectations differently? Of course," Gordon Walton, the game's executive
producer, told The Times. "But all we can do now is cope with what's
happened. The way we're doing that is to give players what they want as
quickly as we can."
