o Atari Shares Fall 40% on Unexpected Loss; Company's Future in Question

New York - Shares of video game publisher Atari, a unit of France-based Infogrames, fell more than 40% on Thursday after the company reported an unexpected loss of $4.8 million during its fiscal third quarter ended Dec. 31. The loss of 4 cents per share is compared with income of $19.6 million, or 16 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier, and was far short of analysts' expectations of a 17 cents per share profit for the quarter. Atari's revenue for the period, which included the crucial holiday shopping period, was $100.8 million, down 36% from the same time last year -- which the company attributed to fewer releases and weak sales. In its quarterly filing, Atari raised "substantial" doubt as to its ability to continue operating as a viable company. Parent company Infogrames also saw its shares fall nearly 19% on the news.

o Developers, Wireless Firms Team on Open Mobile Gaming Architecture

Dallas - A group of wireless firms and mobile game developers announced on Friday that they have joined forces to develop an open gaming architecture for mobile phone games, which they say will lower development costs and time to market. The group includes game developers Activision, Digital Chocolate, Electronic Arts, Konami and Square Enix; phone middleware developers Ideaworks3D and Tao Group; phone operating software providers Microsoft, Symbian and MontaVista; chipmaker Texas Instruments; wireless network operator SK Telecom; and handset makers Samsung and Nokia. The companies hope to reduce mobile game development time and costs by making it easier for developers to simultaneously create games for multiple software platforms -- like Windows Mobile, Symbian and Linux. "By outlining an architecture for gaming platforms, these industry heavyweights will make possible even stronger future growth, exponentially accelerating the adoption of premium mobile games," said Richard Kerslake, of Texas Instruments' wireless terminals business unit. The first developments from the group are expected in the second half of 2006.

o U.K. Broadband Firm ntl to Test BitTorrent Video Download Service

London - ntl, the U.K.'s largest cable company with 3.3 million cable TV subscribers and 1.7 million broadband customers, announced on Friday that it has partnered with peer-to-peer file-sharing software distributor BitTorrenet to test an ultra high-speed video download service in the U.K. The companies will work with CacheLogic to further accelerate the delivery of legal, licensed video content such as movies, music videos and TV programs. BitTorrent has long been a popular means of sharing pirated movies and TV shows, but recently the company negotiated with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to remove copyrighted content from its search engine. "As the world's leading P2P application, we are engaging artists and ISPs to build a consumer-friendly ecosystem around our protocol that allows all involved to benefit from P2P," said Ashwin Navin, co-founder and president of BitTorrent. The trial is expected to launch with ntl broadband subscribers in April.

o Chairman, Board Member Resign from Game Publisher Majesco

Edison, N.J. - Struggling video game publisher Majesco announced on Friday that it has named company founder Morris Sutton as its chairman and interim CEO, replacing resigning chairman James Halpin and filling the vacant CEO spot. Majesco said it will continue to seek a permanent CEO. In addition to Halpin, Marc Weisman has also resigned from the company's board, and Majesco is seeking two new board members. The company also announced that it has received notice from the Nasdaq that its shares could face delisting from the exchange, as it no longer has a minimum of $10 million in stockholders' equity. Majesco's shares have fallen steadily over the past year, from a high of $13.45 in Feb. 2005 to just over $1 today. Recently, the company announced its intention to exit the console games market and focus instead on budget-priced and handheld games.

Reston, Va. - Companies that paid millions of dollars for television spots during Sunday's Super Bowl also received a nice bonus on the Internet, according to new statistics from comScore Networks.
