o Radio Shack to Sell EchoStar TV, Sirius Satellite Radio Services

New York -- Satellite TV provider EchoStar and satellite radio provider Sirius on Thursday announced a retail partnership with electronics retailer Radio Shack, which will begin offering both services in its 7,000 retail stores. Additionally, EchoStar will make Sirius radio programming available to most of its 9 million DISH Network viewers. Beginning in mid-2004, RadioShack will distribute, sell and market Sirius in-home and transportable satellite radios, as well as DISH Network hardware and services, both in its retail outlets and from its website. Separately, New York-based Sirius on Wednesday raised its subscriber and revenue projections for 2004. The company now expects to count 1 million subscribers and $70 million in revenue this year, up from earlier estimates of 860,000 subscribers and $60 million in revenue; Sirius still projects it will achieve break-even status and count 2 million subscribers by the end of 2005.

o Web Portal Lycos to Cut 20% of Staff, Focus on "Personal Connectivity"

Waltham, Mass. -- Spain-based Internet services provider Terra Lycos announced that it will cut 20% of jobs at its U.S.-based Lycos Web portal as part of a restructuring that will see the company phase out its generic media portal business in favor of a focus on subscription-based services. The company also announced that it will outsource all advertising through a new partnership with 24/7 Real Media. Massachusetts-based Lycos said it will now focus more heavily on "personal connectivity services," such as its Matchmaker.com, Angelfire.com, Tripod.com, Raging Bull and Gamesville.com sites. "Lycos is building a business that capitalizes on the most rapidly developing area of the Internet -- integrating the burgeoning networking phenomenon with our proven business models in online publishing, dating, robust search and more," said Mark Stoever, executive vice president of Terra Lycos, U.S. "Lycos will be the first to bring together the entire spectrum of ways people connect online, becoming a must-visit daily tool."

o Gemstar Pays $67.5 Million to Settle Several Shareholder Class Actions

Los Angeles -- Gemstar-TV Guide International, a provider of interactive program guides for digital TV services, announced on Thursday that it has settled a group of shareholder class action lawsuits brought in the midst of an accounting scandal that resulted in the SEC suing a number of top executives at the company. The company will pay plaintiffs a total of $67.5 million in cash and stock to settle the suits. "This settlement is a significant step in Gemstar-TV Guide's efforts to resolve the legal issues that have faced the company," said Gemstar CEO Jeff Shell. "As we put the issues related to past management behind us, the new executive team can focus more completely on maximizing the opportunities for growth and development in front of us." Los Angeles-based Gemstar said that the current settlement does not resolve related shareholder derivative suits or the non-consolidated securities fraud cases pending against the company.

o Correction

A story in Wednesday's edition of Digital Media Wire incorrectly stated that "SpongeBob Squarepants" and "Fairly Odd Parents" are properties of Cartoon Network, and that game developer THQ has developed games in conjunction with the network. Both series are in fact the property of Nickelodeon, for which THQ has developed a number of titles.
