o Report: Revenue from TV Phone
Sales to Pass $30 Billion by 2010
Boston - Revenue from sales of cell phones capable of
receiving mobile TV is expected to grow from $5 billion in 2006 to
over $30 billion by 2010, according to a report from Boston-based
market research firm Strategy Analytics. "Japan and Korea dominate
market volumes today, accounting for over 80 percent of TV phones
sold in 2006. However, Western Europe and North America, as well as
China, will be the hot spots for global volume growth over the next
few years," said Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston. "We expect
Western Europe to ramp up to over 1 million units sold this year,
with North America and China coming online in 2007. The share of TV
phone volume held by Japan and Korea will drop precipitously to
under 50 percent by 2008, and under one third by 2010." The firm
predicts that TV phones based on the DVB-H standard will grow from
19% of the market this year to 40% by 2010, citing the support of
Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Siemens. One popular feature on
TV phones expected to grow is "TV-Out," which lets users send mobile
TV content to a home TV, set-top box or digital video recorder;
Strategy Analytics forecasts that 40% of all TV phones in 2010 will
support this feature, up from less than 10% this year.

o The
Orchard Launches Digital Mastering Service for Rare Vinyl
New York - The Orchard, a digital distributor of
independent label music, on Monday announced the launch of a service
that labels can use to issue archival-quality digital masters of
rare and unreleased vinyl. The Digital Wax service will utilize the
same transcription system used by the Library of Congress to
transfer vinyl into digital format using high-quality audio
equipment. "A modified Simon Yorke S7 turntable fitted with a Kondo
IO-j cartridge feeds the esoteric, rare, expensive and exquisite
Kondo M1000 preamplifier, via a Kondo KSL SFz step-up transformer,"
the company said, in a description of the digital mastering process.
"This signal is in turn converted via an audiophile A-D 2 channel
converter, and archived in DSL. All wiring is Kondo age-annealed
99.9999% pure silver wire, and all components are isolated by
Vibraplane active isolation platforms." New York-based The Orchard
said initial label participants will include SST, Delicious Vinyl,
Lookout Records and Amphetamine Reptile, adding that newly mastered
digital tracks based on the vinyl releases will be available on
digital music stores including iTunes and Napster beginning in
March.
