o Calif. State Lawmaker to
Reintroduce Ban on Violent Game Sales to Minors
Los Angeles -- A California state lawmaker who saw a similar bill
defeated last year plans to introduce legislation that would ban the
sale of violent video games to minors in the state, Reuters reported
on Tuesday. Assemblyman Leland Yee wants to empower district
attorneys to shutter businesses that routinely sell minors games
that "depict serious injury to human beings in a manner that is
especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel." Yee spokesman Adam Keigwin
told Reuters that the bill has the support of the Girl Scouts and
the Parent-Teachers Association. A similar bill introduced last year
by Yee did not reach the Assembly floor, while a separate bill
authored by Yee that requires retailers to prominently display
explanations of video game warning labels was signed into law by
Gov. Schwarzenegger. Courts have consistently struck down proposed
bans on the sales of video games on First Amendment grounds by the
city of Indianapolis, St. Louis County, Missouri and the state of
Washington, while efforts to legislate bans have been launched by
the governor of Illinois and the city council of Washington, D.C.

o Macrovision
Debuts New DVD Copy-Protection Scheme
Santa Clara, Calif. -- Macrovision, a developer of anti-piracy
technologies for recorded media, announced on Tuesday the release of
a new copy-protection technology for DVD video. RipGuard DVD "plugs
the 'digital hole' created by PC-based DeCSS ripper software," the
company said, referring to a crack of early DVD copy-protection --
widely available online -- that allows users to defeat DVD security
and make copies of movies. Macrovision said RipGuard is applied
directly to discs, and does not require additional hardware or
software for computers or DVD players. "RipGuard DVD is designed to
dramatically reduce DVD ripping and the resulting supply of illegal
P2P content," said Macrovision executive vice president Steve
Weinstein. "Ultimately, we see RipGuard DVD and the ACP framework
evolving beyond anti-piracy, and towards enablement of legitimate
on-line transactions, interoperability in tomorrow's digital home,
and the upcoming high definition formats." Santa Clara, Calif.-based
Macrovision expects RipGuard DVD to become widely available in the
second quarter of 2005.

o Report: 11%
of Americans Own an iPod or Other MP3 Player
Washington -- Eleven percent of Americans -- or about 22 million
adults -- report owning an Apple iPod or other MP3 player, according
to a survey conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project.
Not surprisingly, the survey found that those who use the Internet
more, those who are younger, and those who make more money are more
likely than others to own an MP3 player. One in five Americans under
30 owns an MP3 player, compared to one in seven of those between the
ages of 30-48. One in four with household incomes of $75,000 or more
reported owning a player, compared with 10% of those earning between
$30,000 and $75,000, and 6% of those earning less than $30,000. The
study also found that those who use the Internet are four times as
likely to own an MP3 player as those who don't.

o Major
League Baseball to Acquire Tickets.com for $66 Million
New York -- Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on
Tuesday that it has agreed to acquire Tickets.com, a provider of
online ticket sales, for $1.10 per share or about $66 million. The
new media division of the league said it secured a credit line of
$125 million from Bank of America and JPMorgan to cover costs
associated with the transaction, which is expected to close in
March. "As we progress in our ticketing efforts, it is essential for
this industry to set the standard for our fans, providing them with
the best experience not just on the field, but getting there as
well," said Major League Baseball president Robert A. DuPuy. In
addition to providing ticketing services for many pro ball teams,
Costa Mesa, Calif.-based Tickets.com sells online tickets for the
Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the
2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin.

o Shares of
Google Surge as Lock-Up Period Ends
Mountain View, Calif. -- Shares of Google rose 3% on Monday, as
the lock-up period on shares of the search engine giant expired, six
months after its initial public offering (IPO). About 177 million of
the company's shares were released to the market, as insiders took
advantage of their chance to sell the stock they obtained for $85 in
August. The stock closed on Monday at $192.99, with volume nearly
four times as high as usual. The company also released about 39
million shares in November.

o Mobile
Multimedia Developer Adamind Raises $28 Million
London -- Adamind, an Israel-based maker of media adaptation
software for mobile devices, announced that it has raised $28
million in an initial public offering (IPO) on London's Alternative
Investment Market (AIM), valuing the firm at approximately $88.5
million. Adamind said it planned to use the funds to capitalize on
the projected growth of the mobile content services market. The
company, which was formed by the merger of the media transcoding
businesses of Emblaze Ltd. and Royal Philips Electronics, said it
expected trading to begin by Feb. 21. Adamind makes software that
