o Report: Britain is Top Country for
TV Piracy on File-Sharing Networks
London -- Britons are responsible for 18.5% of all of the TV
programs downloaded off peer-to-peer file-sharing systems, making it
the top country for TV piracy worldwide, according to data from
anti-piracy monitoring firm Envisional. By comparison, the U.S.
accounts for 7.3% of unauthorized TV downloads, in third place
behind Australia (15.6%). That may be because U.S. shows are in high
demand in Europe and elsewhere, where they often air on satellite
and cable systems months after their U.S. premieres. Fox's "24" was
the most-pirated program -- averaging about 100,000 downloads per
episode -- along with the network's "The Simpsons" and "The O.C."
Also popular among downloaders are "Enterprise" and "Stargate SG-1."
Envisional found that episodes of "24" and "Six Feet Under" appeared
on file-sharing networks within minutes of their initial airings in
the U.S. The prevalence of TV shows on peer-to-peer networks could
affect the value of these shows once they do air in foreign
territories. For its part, the Motion Picture Association of America
has begun to target operators of file-sharing servers on the
BitTorrent and eDonkey networks where TV shows are traded freely.

o Microsoft
Recalls 14.1 Million Defective Xbox Power Cords
Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft announced on Thursday that it will
recall 14.1 million power cords distributed with its Xbox video game
consoles, due to a potential fire hazard from a "rare electrical
component failure." The company said all consoles manufactured
before Oct. 23, 2003 (except those sold in Continental Europe)
require a replacement power cord, as well as all those sold in
Europe that were made before Jan. 13, 2004. Microsoft said 30 Xbox
power cords -- or fewer than one in 10,000 -- had caused minor
injuries or property damage, such as minor hand burns or smoke
damage. "This is a preventative step we're choosing to take despite
the rarity of these incidents," said Robbie Bach, senior vice
president of the home and entertainment division at Microsoft. "We
regret the inconvenience, but believe offering consumers a free
replacement is the responsible thing to do." Microsoft said Xbox
owners can visit Xbox.com to order a replacement cord, which should
arrive in two to four weeks.

o Dolby
Laboratories Shares Up 38% in IPO
San Francisco -- Audio technology developer Dolby Laboratories
saw its shares rise 38% during an initial public offering (IPO) on

million shares at $18 per share -- up from a previous projected
debut range of between $13.50 and $15.50 per share -- and then saw
its stock price climb to $24.63 during first day trading. Founded in
1965, San Francisco-based Dolby develops audio and surround sound

o Digital
Radio Broadcast Developer iBiquity Lands $30 Million
Columbia, Md. -- iBiquity Digital, a developer of digital radio
broadcast technology, said on Thursday that it has landed $30
million in its third round. Previous investors New Venture Partners,
Grotech Capital Group, J.P. Morgan Partners, Gannett and Pequot
Capital co-led the round, which also included participation from
Waller-Sutton Media Partners, Whitney & Co. and MidOcean Capital
Partners. In addition, Maryland-based iBiquity said that it has
signed a deal to receive up to $30 million more in structured debt
financing from DC private equity firm Columbia Partners. The influx
of capital gives the company a huge financial boost as it continues
to roll out its HD Radio technology, which allows terrestrial radio
stations to broadcast a digital signal alongside their traditional
analog signals. In recent months, iBiquity has received commitments
to deploy the technology -- which digitizes standard AM and FM
signals to enable better sound quality and new wireless data
services -- at 2,500 radio stations in the U.S.

o Alpha
Spacecom Wins Chinese Govt. Contract to Equip Digital Theaters
Hong Kong -- Alpha Spacecom, a Colorado-based firm providing
digital cinema conversion services for movie theater exhibitors,
announced on Thursday that the Chinese government has approved its
proposal to form a joint venture for the conversion of Chinese
theaters from film to digital projection systems. The State
Administration of Radio, Film and Television of the People's
Republic of China will provide $30 million in funding to the Digital
Cinema Reconstruction Corporation, a joint venture to be operated by
Alpha Spacecom and the state-run China Film Group. "This is a bold
move by the PRC to deliver state-of-the-art film entertainment to
China's vast and growing leisure/entertainment society," said Alpha
Spacecom chairman Fung T. Sien. "Another important benefit is that
the digital process promotes international intellectual property
rights protections as set forth in China's accession to the WTO and
allows exhibitors to control admissions and costs accounting
electronically, thus supporting permanent normal trade relations
with China." China plans to overtake the U.S. in the number of
digital theaters offered by equipping more than 150 by the end of
this year. The country has already converted 60 theaters, and the
joint venture expects to have completed 400 new installations by the
end of 2006.

(New York) The New York Times on Thursday reported on how the
U.S. Army is exposing programmers developing its "America's Army"
online multiplayer game/recruitment tool to actual combat
simulations at a base in Wyoming, in a bid to maintain the game's
authenticity. "America's Army" has registered about 4.7 million
users, and averages about 30,000 concurrent online players. The
Pentagon, which is spending about $6 million per year on the game,
regularly sends Army soldiers to consult with the game's
programmers, who are Pentagon contractors. "We don't expect that a
young person is going to play the game and run out and join the
Army," Chris Chambers, a retired Army major and the deputy director
for "America's Army," told The Times. "That was never the point. We
want the game to help us form a more long-term connection with the
young person."
