o Apple's iTunes Surpasses 1
Billion Song Downloads
Cupertino, Calif. - Apple said that one billion songs have
now been downloaded from its iTunes Music Store since it was
launched less than three years ago. The billionth song, "Speed of
Sound," was purchased as part of Coldplay's X&Y album by Alex
Ostrovsky from West Bloomfield, Mich. Ostrovsky won a 20-inch iMac,
10 iPods and a $10,000 iTunes gift certificate, and Apple will
establish a scholarship to Julliard in his name. Apple said that
iTunes currently features more than two million songs, as well as
35,000 podcasts, 16,000 audiobooks, 3,500 music videos and a variety
of short films and TV shows.

o MPAA Sues
Sites That Link to Pirated Movies on Newsgroups, P2P Networks
Los Angeles - The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)
announced this week that it has filed lawsuits against a number of
websites that provide links to illegal movie downloads from the
BitTorrent and eDonkey file-sharing networks, as well as from Usenet
newsgroups. "Website operators who abuse technology to facilitate
infringements of copyrighted works by millions of people are not
anonymous -- they can and will be stopped," said John G. Malcolm,
executive vice president and director of worldwide anti-piracy
operations for the MPAA. The MPAA said TorrentSpy.com and
IsoHunt.com are two of the most popular sites used for finding
pirated content; actions were also taken against BThub.com,
TorrentBox.com, NiteShadow.com and Ed2k-It.com. The group said that
Torrentbox.com and IsoHunt.com boasted of having enabled over one
million downloads of the movie "Fantastic Four," and over 4.4
million downloads of "Aliens". The MPAA also for the first time
targeted sites that enable newsgroup users to find pirated content,
such as NZB-Zone.com, BinNews.com and DVDRs.net. The lawsuits are
unique in that they target sites that provide indexes of locations
where pirated files may be found, rather than sites that provide the
downloads themselves. "We haven't had a case that really tests the
case of whether providing an indexing service by itself an
infringement," Electronic Frontier Foundation attorney Fred von
Lohmann told CNET News.com.

o Ted Turner
Stepping Down From Board of Time Warner
Dulles, Va. - Time Warner, the parent company of America
Online, said on Friday that Ted Turner will be stepping down from
the company's board of directors. Turner, who has often clashed with
Time Warner management, gave no specific reason for stepping down.
Turner saw the value of his large stock holdings in Time Warner drop
sharply in the years following the company's merger with America
Online. "It is after much deliberation that I have decided not to
stand for reelection at the annual meeting," said Turner. "I have
enjoyed working with Dick Parsons as well as the other board members
and the management team."

o MySpace Parent
Co. Founder Sues Over News Corp. Purchase Price
Los Angeles - The founder of Intermix Media, the parent
company of social networking site MySpace, has filed suit against
his former company, claiming the $580 million paid by News Corp. to
acquire Intermix and MySpace was far too little. "It's something
that everyone would've seen is worth in the several-billion-dollar
range, MySpace by itself," Greenspan told The Los Angeles Times.
Greenspan's suit claims the company's board breached their duty to
shareholders by failing to conduct an auction to obtain maximum
value for the company; the suit also names VantagePoint Venture
Associates, which helped facilitate the deal. "It's clear that if
Intermix had provided current revenue figures and projections for
MySpace along with user growth projections, shareholders would never
have approved the News Corp. transaction," said Greenspan. "It is my
goal to see News Corp 'square up' with the rest of the Intermix
shareholders by either voluntarily unwinding the MySpace transaction
and allowing a proper auction process to occur, or paying us what we
deserve via providing several billion dollars of compensation,"

o National
Archives, Google Team to Put Historic Films Online
Washington - The National Archives in Washington and
Internet search giant Google on Friday announced the launch of a
pilot program that will digitize and make historic films available
for free online. Under a non-exclusive deal, researchers and the
general public will be able to access a collection of 103 historic
movies, documentaries and other films from the National Archives
through Google Video as well as the National Archives website. "For
the first time, the public will be able to view this collection of
rare and unusual films on the Internet," said Allen Weinstein,
archivist of the United States. The National Archives and Google
said that they are exploring the possibilities of expanding the
online film collection and making the Archives' extensive textual
holdings available through the Internet, as well.

Seattle - Loudeye Technologies, a provider of branded
digital music stores and other digital media services, announced
this week that it plans to raise $8.25 million through a secondary
stock offering. The company will use the proceeds for working
capital and general corporate purposes. Seattle-based Loudeye laid
off an undisclosed number of staff earlier this month, as part of a
plan to cut costs by $2.5 million per quarter. The company also said
its shares are in danger of being delisted by the Nasdaq, for
failing to maintain the $1 minimum listing requirement for 30
