o Cisco Completes $6.9 Billion Deal for Set-top Box Firm Scientific-Atlanta

San Jose, Calif. - Cisco Systems, the network equipment giant, said on Monday that it has completed its $6.9 billion acquisition of Scientific-Atlanta, a Georgia-based provider of digital video delivery equipment. Cisco said that the deal, first announced in November, will give it a stronger presence in the home entertainment market. Earlier this month, Cisco announced plans raise $5.5 billion in a new debt offering, with plans to use a portion of the proceeds to fund the acquisition.

o Army Paratroopers Face Court-Martial for Appearing on Gay Porn Site

Tallahassee, Fla. - The Army has initiated court-martial proceedings against several paratroopers with the 82nd Airborne Division, who were allegedly paid to be filmed for a gay pornographic website, Reuters reported. Pfc. James Wilt, a spokesman for the 82nd Airborne, did not disclose to Reuters the name of the website in question, which operates out of a home in Fayetteville, N.C., near Fort Bragg where the 82nd is based. Three members of the 82nd are set to be arraigned on March 7 on charges of sodomy, pandering and engaging in sex for money while being filmed, which is against the U.S. Military Code of Justice; one of the men is also being charged with adultery. Another four, whose names Wilt did not disclose, will be demoted to private, placed on restriction and docked a month's pay.

o Private-Equity Firms Finalizing Bid for VNU, Report Says

Amsterdam - According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, a group of seven private-equity firms is preparing a $8.6 billion bid for VNU, the Netherlands-based media firm that owns the Nielsen ratings service, in addition to Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter. The report said the group includes AlpInvest Partners of the Netherlands, Permira Advisers of the U.K., Blackstone Group, Carlyle Group, Hellman & Friedman, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and ThomasH. Lee Partners.

o Personalized Video Search Engine Firm MeeVee Raises $6.5 Million

Burlingame, Calif. - MeeVee, a developer of personalized video programming search technology, announced on Monday that it has raised $6.5 million in its second round of venture capital financing. Labrador Ventures led the investment round; WaldenVC, Edmond de Rothschild Venture Capital and DEFTA Partners also participated. Burlingame, Calif.-based MeeVee provides a consumer service that lets users search for, manage and share TV and video programming, as well as a syndication program that lets newspapers, cable operators and other content providers offer MeeVee search on their websites. The site's content includes summaries and episode trailers for TV shows on ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX, as well as hundreds of other cable and satellite channels. The company will use the funds to support engineering, marketing and business development efforts.

o EGT Raises $8.5 Million in Third Round of Venture Capital

Atlanta - EGT Inc., a provider of digital video equipment, has raised $8.5 million in its third round of venture capital, with participation from Noro-Moseley Partners, H.I.G. Capital, Sevin Rosen Funds and others. Founded in 2000, EGT offers equipment that allows cable, telco and satellite network operators the ability to deliver more television channels over their existing networks. The company said that it has experienced rapid growth through product deployments at some the largest operators in North America and around the world. The new financing will support operational growth and international expansion and will speed new product delivery for Internet protocol television, the company said.

o U.S. Wireless Revenue Climbs 11% in '05; 25 Million Subscribers Added

Arlington, Va. - Wireless revenue in the U.S. totaled $174.7 billion last year, up nearly 11% from the prior year, according to new statistics from the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). The organization said that carriers added 25 million new subscribers during the year -- the highest number ever. Nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population has now subscribed to a wireless service. The TIA said that it expects the overall wireless market to grow by an average of 11% a year through 2009, when revenues are predicted to top $265 billion.

New York - CBS on Monday launched a subscription service that lets consumers subscribe to wireless news and entertainment alerts that include video and pictures. "CBS News To Go" will offer up to five daily alerts for 99 cents per month, while "ET To Go," available for $3.99 per month, will offer content from "Entertainment Tonight". CBS partnered with Boston-based m-Qube to power the wireless alert services. CBS is also offering CBS and UPN video clips on demand through a partnership with Amp'd Mobile.

Sprint Nextel, the recently merged wireless giant, said on Monday that music, comedy and entertainment programming from MTV Networks is now available on-demand to customers of its Sprint TV service. News Corporation's Fox Mobile Entertainment unit on Monday announced the launch of a new mobile content portal, Mobizzo. The site will offer downloads like ringtones and wallpapers from Fox's "Family Guy," "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Ice Age: The Meltdown," in addition to mobile games, and mobile art from Shepard Fairey and March Mahoney. San Francisco - Wired News on Monday reported on the "MySpace backlash," or steps taken by schools and parents reacting to teens' use of the social networking site. While there have been several instances of adults charged with stalking underage victims through the site, one honors high school student in Pennsylvania was suspended and placed into an alternative education program for creating a parody profile based on his school's principal. "There have been more articles on MySpace predators than there's been reported predators online," Danah Boyd, a UC Berkeley researcher who has studied MySpace for two years, told Wired News. "It's a hyped up fear, and it scares the shit out of parents."
