o TiVo, Parents Groups Team on
Parental Controls, Programming Suggestions
Alviso, Calif. - TiVo on Thursday introduced a new feature
that offers parents the ability to control the programming their
children have access to, and also suggests family-friendly
programming as designated by Common Sense Media and the Parents
Television Council. TiVo KidZone allows parents to choose from shows
recommended by these groups, add or remove specific programs or
channels from children's access, and block access to any programming
or channels not part of KidZone. "We are very grateful to TiVo for
bringing forward KidZone. This is just what the TV marketplace
needed," said Tim Winter, executive director of the Parents
Television Council. "TiVo will now allow parents to enforce their
own programming values, so for those parents who share the Parents
Television Council's concerns, the features TiVo is introducing will
help them exercise responsibility for their children's viewing
habits and easily implement our system for screening shows for
kids." The TiVo KidZone feature, slated to launch by mid-2006, will
be included as part of the standard TiVo service fee. The service
will not be available for subscribers who receive TiVo service from
DirecTV.

o Yahoo to
Shift from In-House Content to Acquisitions, User Contributions
New York - Lloyd Braun, the former ABC development
executive who now heads Yahoo's Media Group, plans to switch the
unit's focus from original television-style programs, like its
"Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone," to content acquired from third
parties or contributed by Yahoo users, The New York Times reported.
"I now get excited about user-generated content the way I used to
get excited about thinking about what television shows would work,"
Braun told The Times. Braun also dispelled rumors that he was
unhappy and planning to leave Yahoo. "I didn't fully appreciate what
success in this medium is really going to look like," Braun added.
"This is not about creating one-off hits like in my old business.
That is not going to create a sustainable competitive advantage over
the long term."

o Digital
Music Service Providers Say Songwriters' Cut Too Large
New York - The Digital Media Association (DiMA), a trade
group representing the digital music services of Apple, AOL, Yahoo,
Napster and RealNetworks, among others, believes that music
publishers are taking too large a share of digital music revenue.
While record labels claim about 65% of the revenue from digital
songs, songwriters' share of the revenue from each song has risen
from 7.5% to 9.1%. "Our pie was shrinking but we were paying more
and more to the publishers," DiMA executive director Jonathan Potter
told attendees of the Digital Music Forum, a two-day event in New
York produced by Digital Media Wire. "This made the economics as
upside down as the zero price point -- it didn't allow people to do
reasonable forecasting or price points."

Santa Monica, Calif. - The Global Gaming League, a

Rose and Cobi Jones. The league's players will be equipped with
custom Xbox 360 consoles, and all competition will take place on the

London - According to a report by market analysis firm

Digital TV Firm GIGA Raises $3.6 Million
Frankfurt - GIGA TV, a Germany-based TV broadcaster and
portal owner, announced that it has raised $3.6 million in venture
capital financing, led by Wellington Venture Partners. GIGA said the
funding would allow it to expand its position as the largest digital
TV network for the gaming and e-sports community in Europe. "This
new round of financing will enable us to speed up production of

content from the two more strongly with one another," GIGA Managing

o Wireless
Investment Set to Hit All-Time High, Report Says
London - According to a new report by telecommunications
research firm Visiongain, investment in wireless technologies is on
the rise, bucking a general trend of venture-capital decline over
the last five years. In 2005, 152 wireless-related companies
received about €1 billion in funding, a 24% year-on-year increase.
Visiongain predicts that investment in the industry will continue to
grow, reaching an all-time high this year. "Wireless is where the
action is, and this is a great time to be a wireless start-up in
search of venture funding," said Visiongain analyst Lynne Gregg. "As
the U.S. public markets remain weak and private equity investing
grows outside the U.S., we will see many more IPOs of wireless
companies taking place in the public markets outside the U.S., such
as the London Stock Exchange's AIM."

Dallas - Blockbuster Online, the rental giant's online DVD

New York - Threats to legitimate digital music sales
today include makers of satellite radios that can record streams,

Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital civil liberties group, and
similar-minded groups Zeropaid and Downhill Battle. "One wonders if
