o NBC Universal to Acquire Women's
Portal iVillage for $600 Million
New York - NBC Universal announced on Monday that it has
signed an agreement to acquire iVillage, a website catering to
women, for $600 million in cash. Founded in 1995, New York-based
iVillage now claims over 14 million monthly users for its site,
which offers content channels ranging from health to entertainment
to beauty and style. "Acquiring iVillage will enable us to bring our
programming to a large and passionate online community," said NBC
Universal chairman and CEO Bob Wright. "We look forward to building
on the considerable brand strength iVillage has developed over the
past 10 years and to giving our advertising clients new and exciting
ways to reach a valuable demographic." NBC Universal said it expects
the acquisition to grow its digital revenues to around $200 million
in 2006, and expects a 20% growth rate going forward.

o Microsoft
Asks U.S. Courts to Intervene in Antitrust Case
Brussels - Microsoft announced that it has asked three
U.S. federal courts to force rivals IBM, Sun Microsystems, Oracle
and Novell to hand over a number of documents related to the
software giant's protracted antitrust battle with the European
Commission. In particular, Microsoft is seeking access to
correspondence between the companies in question and NeilBarrett,
the independent trustee appointed to ensure compliance with an EU
decision that Microsoft abused its market position. "This evidence
could (be) important for Microsoft if the Commission imposes
penalties for non-compliance . . . is forced to appeal to the
European Court of First Instance and the European Court of Justice,"
said Microsoft, which is facing a $2.4-million-a-day fine.

o AOL to
Begin Selling TV Shows, User Videos Online
New York - In a bid to challenge new offerings from
Apple's iTunes Store, Yahoo and Google Video, America Online plans
to begin selling TV programs and other video content through its
website later this year, Reuters reported on Monday. "We've been in
discussion for months with every major cable and broadcast network,"
Kevin Conroy, executive vice president of AOL Media Networks, told
Reuters. The service is expected to include both free and
pay-per-download programming, as well as a subscription component,
and will utilize Microsoft delivery and security technology that
enables downloads to portable media players. Before the new service
launches, AOL plans later this month to offer nearly 5000 vintage TV
shows for free, on a service called In2TV.

o Vivendi
Universal Games to Launch Mobile Games Division
Los Angeles - Vivendi Universal Games plans to launch a
mobile games unit that will both develop and publish original
titles, and license games from third parties based on intellectual
property it owns, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The company
hired Paul Maglione, formerly vice president of marketing and
publishing at U.K. mobile game developer I-play, to develop the new
division. "These last five years, our mother company has become
extremely keen on mobile across all our divisions -- not just with
Vivendi Universal Games but also SFR, which is one of the leading
European wireless network carriers; Universal Music, which is the
most active music company in mobile music; and the Canal+ Group,
which is doing a lot of things in mobile TV. So there's a wider
corporate focus on mobile which fits VUG very nicely," Maglione told
THR. The mobile games unit plans to release a dozen titles in 2006,
including adaptations of its "Crash Bandicoot" and "Spyro"
franchises, and will also have an eye towards acquiring mobile game
companies. "I think you'll see other pure-play publishers who could
be acquired over the next 12 months," added Maglione.

company said that it will supply developers with a software
