o Online CD
Trading Post Service La La Raises $9 Million
Palo Alto, Calif. - La la, a new online service that lets
users swap physical CDs with one another through the mail, announced
on Tuesday that it has raised $9 million in its first round of
venture capital financing, from Bain Capital and Ignition Partners.
La la charges $1 per trade, and offers a library of 1.8 million CD
titles; if a desired title is not available, la la will provide
links to buy the CD new or download it at retail prices. The company
also says that, "while there is no obligation to do so, la la is
setting aside 20% of trading revenues for musicians." La la says
that the U.S. Copyright Act stipulates that trading CDs has always
been legal, under the "first sale doctrine" that allows the owner of
a lawfully made CD to dispose of the possession of the copy without
permission or payment of additional royalties to the copyright
holder.
