o Motorola Invests in Interactive Video Developer WatchPoint

Schaumberg, Ill. -- Motorola announced on Thursday that it has made an
undisclosed equity investment in WatchPoint Media, a developer of
interactive video technology. The company's investment is part of
WatchPoint's second round, the total of which has not yet been announced.
Boston-based WatchPoint, which was spun-out of MIT's Media Lab, develops
video hyperlinking technology that lets viewers surf within video to
explore e-commerce and other interactive television features. The
technology works with analog or digital cable, broadcast satellite or Web
access to let users interact with moving objects in video.

o Online Music Firm ARTISTdirect Given Delisting Notice from Nasdaq

Los Angeles -- ARTISTdirect, a network of musical artists' fan sites
providing news and e-commerce, announced that it has received notice from
the Nasdaq that its stock is subject to delisting from the exchange. The
company's stock has traded below the exchange's $1 minimum since October;
it recently launched a "Dutch Auction" buyback of its shares in the hopes
of raising its value. ARTISTdirect's delisting has been stayed pending a
hearing with the Nasdaq. "We are aggressively reducing our burn rate and
as of December 31st had over $87 million in cash and short-term
investments," said Marc Geiger, CEO of ARTISTdirect. "We believe we are on
a path to achieve profitability with the financial resources to get
there."

o Gay Portal PlanetOut Lays Off 25%, Terminates Merger With Publisher

Los Angeles -- PlanetOut Partners, a network of websites focused on the
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities, said on Thursday that
it will lay off 25 percent of its staff, or 29 employees. The company also
announced that it has terminated its merger plans with Liberation
Publications, which publishes gay-themed magazines The Advocate and Out,
as well as Alyson Books. Los Angeles-based PlanetOut said that the
decision was based on "changes in the investment environment" and its
subsequent merger with Online Partners, which operates the website
Gay.com. The company said its across the board layoffs are a result of
redundant positions created by its merger with Online Partners, and are in
line with its intention to become profitable by the end of 2001.

(Los Angeles) RadioActive.com, a service that lets users search for
musical artists and then copies streams of their music from online radio
and downloads them to their hard drives, will launch a beta test version
of its software on Monday, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday. The
downloaded songs are encrypted on the user's hard drive, which the company
says can prevent them from being copied to a CD or shared with another
computer. Some controversy exists as to whether or not this measure
provides adequate security against piracy, and whether copying a stream
would not invoke additional performance licensing fees from the recording
industry.
