o Microsoft Introduces
"Ultra-Mobile PC" Wireless Tablet Computer
Hannover, Germany - Microsoft on Thursday unveiled the
product of its "Project Origami," a one-inch-thick, tablet-style PC
with a 7-inch touch-screen that it calls the "Ultra-Mobile PC" (UMPC).
The two-pound device runs a full version of Microsoft Windows XP,
supports wireless Internet browsing, and features a 60GB hard drive.
The first UMPCs are scheduled to ship for between $600 and $1,100 in
April, from manufacturers including Samsung, Asus and Founder Group.
Movielink, an Internet video-on-demand service that delivers movies
using Microsoft technology, announced that its service will be
included with UMPC devices, while Sling Media, whose Slingbox device
allows users to access the premium pay-TV channels they subscribe to
at home from any Internet-connected device, said it has developed a
customized version of its software for UMPCs.

o Senators
Want New Study on Effects of Media Violence on Behavior
Washington - A group of Senators including Hillary Clinton
(D-N.Y.), Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) Rick
Santorum (R-Penn.) and Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) has initiated efforts
to conduct a Center for Disease Control and Prevention study that
would examine "the effects of viewing and using electronic media,
including television, computers, video games and the Internet on
children's cognitive, social, physical, and psychological
development." The Children Media Research and Advancement Act has
passed a Senate committee and now heads to the full Senate for
consideration. "America is a media-rich society, but despite the
flood of information, we still lack critical information," Sen.
Lieberman said, in a statement. "The questions about the effects --
positive or negative -- of media on our children's health, education
and development are too important to go unasked and unanswered." A
string of recent court decisions have struck down states'
legislative attempts to regulate the sale of violent video games to
minors, on the grounds that they are unconstitutional restrictions
on free speech -- often stating that no solid data exists to prove a
correlation between exposure to media violence and violent behavior.
Lieberman and Clinton introduced similar legislation that would
regulate video game sales at the federal level last year.

o Google
Pays $90 Million to Settle Click-Fraud Lawsuit
Mountain View, Calif. - Shares of Google fell 3% on
Thursday after the Internet search giant agreed to pay $90 million
to settle its part of an industry-wide lawsuit alleging that it
overcharged clients of its pay-per-click advertising service. The
suit, filed last year by Lane's Gifts and Collectibles on behalf of
thousands of advertisers, claims that the company, as well as others
such as Yahoo, conspired with some advertisers to conceal the
problem of "click fraud," in which malicious people repeatedly click
on the ad links of their rivals to drive up the price they pay.
Advertisers pay Google based on the number of times people click on
their ads. Yahoo, which is also named in the suit, said that it
plans to fight the allegations. Shares of Google fell $10.88 to
close at $343.

o TiVo
Introduces New Pricing Structure, Eliminates Lifetime Service Deal
Alviso, Calif. - TiVo introduced a new pricing structure
on Thursday for its digital video recorder service, which
essentially allows consumers to opt to pay no money for the device
up front, instead bundling the cost with one- to three-year service
agreements. "After extensive testing and evaluation of various
pricing and packaging approaches, we will launch a subscription
option that combines the sale of the TiVo service together with the
TiVo box," said TiVo CEO Tom Rogers. "This is great for TiVo
subscribers who will now have the ability to get TiVo service with
no upfront hardware costs." The company will still allow consumers
to pay for the long-term service agreements up front, but announced
that next week it will eliminate its option to purchase a lifetime
service agreement for the device. Under TiVo's new pricing
structure, a TiVo box with a one-year service agreement will cost
$19.95 per month, or $224 prepaid; a two-year agreement will cost
$18.95 a month, or $369 prepaid; and a three-year agreement will be
$16.95 a month, or $469 prepaid. The company also announced on
Thursday that it ended its fiscal year in January 2006 with 4.4
million subscribers, a 45% increase over the previous year.

Large-Format Movie Exhibitor IMAX to Explore Possible Sale or Merger
Toronto - IMAX Corporation, the operator of large-format
movie theaters, announced on Thursday that it has retained Allen &
Company and UBS Investment Back as advisors to help the company
explore strategic options, including a possible merger or sale of
the company. "We have recently received several unsolicited
inquiries, and believe this preliminary interest shows that there is
awareness of the strength and attractive qualities of our business,"
said IMAX co-chairmen and co-CEOs Richard Gelfond and Bradley
Wechsler. "We think this interest, coupled with our solid fiscal
2005 results and compelling growth opportunities, makes this an
ideal time to explore our options." The announcement comes as IMAX
posted a 54% increase in its fourth-quarter profits. Research
Associates analyst Marla Backer told Reuters that potential suitors
could include film studios like Warner Bros., or technology firms
like Apple Computer or Microsoft.

NY Times: Some Labels See Digital Singles Cannibalizing Album Sales
Los Angeles - The New York Times reported on Thursday on
the decision of some record labels to hold off on releasing new
singles to digital services like iTunes, for fear they will
cannibalize sales of more-profitable full-albums. Island Def Jam
claims this strategy helped its artist Ne-Yo, whose single "So Sick"
was released early to radio but not iTunes, and whose album "In My
Own Words" went on to open at No. 1 with sales of over 301,000
copies. "If you know you have something of depth, you have to be
careful about how you bring it into the marketplace," Island Def Jam
COO Steve Bartels told The Times. "If everything is up and gone
before you have a chance to listen to the album, what do you have?"
However, "So Sick" was also downloaded 3.4 million times from free
file-sharing services during its opening week. "The labels are
shooting themselves in the foot," Rhapsody executive editor Tim
Quirk told The Times. "You need to take advantage of every possible
opportunity for people to pay in legitimate ways… Every single track
that you are worried about is available for free whether you want it
to be or not."
