o Newspaper Publisher McClatchy to
Buy Knight-Ridder for $6.5 Billion
San Jose, Calif. - McClatchy, the Sacramento-based
newspaper publisher, said on Monday that it will acquire fellow
publisher Knight-Ridder for $6.5 billion, making it the second
largest newspaper publisher in the U.S. McClatchy will now operate
32 daily newspapers -- including the Miami Herald, Kansas City Star
and Charlotte Observer -- and more than 50 other publications. The
company said that it also plans to sell off 12 Knight Ridder
newspapers, including the Philadelphia Inquirer and San Jose Mercury
News. Looking to take advantage of corporate synergies, McClatchy
said that it plans to cut an undetermined number of jobs, and
expects to save about $40 million by eliminating corporate
redundancies and another $15 million by combining Internet
operations. Shareholders had been pressuring Knight-Ridder to pursue
a sale for several months.

o Video Game
Industry Group Launches "Video Game Voters Network"
Washington - The Entertainment Software Association (ESA),
a video game industry trade group, on Monday launched the "Video
Game Voters Network," which it bills as a grassroots political
network for gamers. The site is geared toward adults who play
computer and video games, and are looking to take action on policy
issues affecting the computer and video game industry. At its core,
the network opposes efforts to regulate the content of entertainment
media, including proposals to criminalize the sale of certain games
to minors, or regulate video games differently than movies, music,
books and other media. "With over seventy bills to restrict game
sales to minors already pending in state legislatures across the
country this year, it's time for gamers to make their voices heard,"
said Doug Lowenstein, president of the ESA. The site will help
register gamers to vote, and provide tools to allow them to take
action on issues by contacting federal, state and local officials to
express their views.
