o Webnoize: As Filters Put in Place, Napster Usage Drops By Half

Cambridge, Mass. -- Since music file-sharing service Napster implemented
blocking of the 135,000 songs sent by the Recording Industry Association
of America last night, downloads by Napster users have dropped by 50
percent, according to research from Massachusetts-based analyst firm
Webnoize. Additionally, the average number of files that each user is
sharing has dropped 59 percent, as blocked songs continue to be filtered
from showing up when a user performs a search. The data indicates that
Napster's filter is working; however, files from artists like Eminem and
Elvis that the RIAA asked Napster to block are still available on the
service. A Napster spokeswoman told Webnoize that an undisclosed number of
song titles and filenames were submitted by the RIAA on Monday and
Tuesday. "Further titles will be blocked in the coming days, pushing
content available through Napster down further," said Webnoize analyst
Matt Bailey. "Users will quickly migrate to alternative systems."

San Francisco -- Listen.com, a creator and distributor of online music
services, announced on Thursday that its Listen Japan subsidiary -- a
joint venture with TransCosmos, Inc. -- has acquired Japanese mobile phone
content company Noel. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Noel
provides music and entertainment content to all of Japan's major mobile
phone Internet operators, including NTT DoCoMo's i-mode.
"Listen.com plans to watch closely and learn from Listen Japan's wireless
activities and build off them when the time is right in the U.S. market,"

o Artisan Entertainment Withdraws Proposed IPO, Seeks Merger Partners

New York -- Movie studio Artisan Entertainment has withdrawn its proposed
initial public offering, citing current market conditions, Inside.com
reported on Thursday. The company also issued a statement in which it said
that it has retained investment banks Merrill Lynch and Allen & Company to
"identify qualified purchasers and merger partners and to assist in the
evaluation of proposals." Inside said the speculation has been that Lion's
Gate Entertainment is seeking to acquire the company for its video assets,
which include films like "Dirty Dancing" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."

o Sony to Link Games to Cell Phones Rather than Compete with Game Boy

Tokyo -- Sony Computer Entertainment said on Thursday that it will not
develop a portable device to compete with Nintendo's Game Boy, instead
choosing to develop cell phone technology that would add portability to
its PlayStation 2 game console, Reuters reported. The company recently
announced that it would implement PlayStation 2 game features that will
allow interaction with Web-enabled i-mode phones from Japan's NTT DoCoMo.
Nintendo is scheduled to release its updated version of the popular Game
Boy -- the Game Boy Advance -- on March 21.
