o House Committee Approves Bill
That Would Ban Internet Gambling
Washington - A bill that would prohibit U.S. companies
from accepting credit cards, checks, and wire and electronic funds
transfers such as PayPal as payments for online gambling has passed
in the House Financial Services Committee, Reuters reported. The
bill is intended in part to target offshore gambling sites
frequented by U.S. residents, and would cover any gambling
establishment not permitted by federal or state law. The bill, which
now moves to the House floor, has been opposed by Antigua, a haven
for offshore gaming operations, as well as Rep. Barney Frank
(D-Mass.), the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee.
"Adults are entitled to do with their money what they want to do,"
said Frank.

o ESA Seeks
Legal Fee Reimbursement From State of Illinois
Washington - The Entertainment Software Association (ESA),
a video game industry trade group, said on Thursday that it has
filed a petition in the U.S. District Court seeking nearly $645,000
in legal fees related to the state of Illinois' unsuccessful effort
to enact a law banning the sale of violent video games to children.
In December, a federal court judge handed down a permanent
injunction halting the new state law, ruling it unconstitutional.
"We had hoped to reach a settlement without the need to file this
petition," said ESA president Doug Lowenstein. "Unfortunately, while
it was clear we could agree on the amount of fees to be reimbursed,
the state made other demands which we could not accept."

Internet, Payment Companies Team to Fight Child Porn
Alexandria, Va. - Eighteen of the world's most prominent
financial institutions and Internet companies have joined with the
National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and its
international sibling in an effort to eradicate the growing problem
of Internet child pornography. The new Financial Coalition Against
Child Pornography said that its goal is to eliminate commercial
child porn by 2008 by stopping the flow of money to its creators and
distributors. To that end, all the major credit card companies and
web payments company PayPal have teamed with Internet giant such as
AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo. The organization said that child
pornography has become a multi-billion dollar commercial enterprise
and is among the fastest growing businesses on the Internet, in part
because of how easy it has become to purchase child porn by using
credit cards and other online payment methods.

Provide Full-Track Mobile Song Downloads for Verizon
New York - The Orchard, a digital distributor of
independent label music, announced on Thursday that it has expanded
its relationship with Verizon Wireless, and will now provide the
Verizon V Cast Music service with full-song downloads as well as
master recording ringtones from its catalog of 800,000 tracks.
Separately, New York-based The Orchard on Thursday announced an
agreement with Canadian management company, record label and
publishing business Nettwerk Music Group. Under the deal, The
Orchard will digitally distribute Nettwerk's artists -- including
Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLachlan and Barenaked Ladies -- while
Nettwerk will be a regional partner, sourcing artists and labels for
The Orchard, which distributes tracks to iTunes, Napster and other
online retailers.

LiveJournal Blogging Firm Six Apart Raises $12 Million
San Francisco - Just days after announcing its acquisition
of mobile photo blogging company SplashBlog, San Francisco-based Six
Apart, a provider of blogging software and services, said that it
has raised $12 million in its third round of funding. The round was
led by Focus Ventures, and also included participation from Intel
Capital and previous investor August Capital. Six Apart is the maker
of the Movable Type publishing platform, the TypePad hosted blogging
service and LiveJournal, an online community organized around
personal journals. The company said that more than 15 million people
currently use its software and services, and over 30 million visit
its hosted sites each month.

Network, Technology Provider PodTech Raises $5.5 Million
Menlo Park, Calif. - PodTech, a provider of podcasting
technology and distributor of a network of established podcasts,
announced on Thursday that it has raised $5.5 million in its first
round of venture capital financing. Investors in the round included
Venrock Associates, US Venture Partners and Silicon Valley angel
investors. Founded in May 2005, Menlo Park, Calif.-based PodTech
distributes the InfoTalk technology and business-focused podcast,
and has also developed an aggregated set of sponsors and paid
content for its sponsorship network. Its corporate clients include
Intel, Yahoo, Symantec and Nvidia.

Content Publishing Firm Tira Wireless Raises $13 Million
San Francisco - Tira Wireless, a San Francisco-based
provider of technology for mobile content deployment, said on
Thursday that it has secured $13 million in its third round of
funding, led by Lehman Ventures. Previous investors Brightspark
Ventures, Flagship Ventures and Export Development Canada also
participated. Tira said that it will use the new capital to round
out its platform to include all data types, including music and
video; and expand its support and distribution. The company said
that more than 80% of mobile content publishers have used its Jump
technology to create and deploy mobile games and applications in
multiple languages.

MusicIP to Combine Track ID Service, Online Music Encyclopedia
Austin - MusicBrainz, a user-maintained online music
encyclopedia, announced that it has partnered with MusicIP,
developer of a "music relationship engine," with the two pledging to
combine and share music identification and metadata. MusicIP's
MusicDNS service -- similar to Gracenote's CDDB, which identifies a
CD based on the number of tracks and the length of those tracks --
has identified a growing library of 16 million tracks based on their
acoustic properties. The MusicBrainz community of nearly 200,000
registered users has so far catalogued 4.5 million tracks from
370,000 artists. MusicIP said that it will donate 10% of revenue
from the delivery of MusicBrainz data via MusicDNS back to the
MetaBrainz Foundation, which maintains the non-profit MusicBrainz
community.

MovieBandits.com Launches Online DVD "Trading" Service
Dallas - MovieBandits.com on Thursday announced the launch of
its online service that enables the trading of new and used DVDs.
The company was founded by Dave Perkovich, formerly vice president
of online subscription services at Blockbuster, where he helped
launch that company's online DVD rental service. Dallas-based
MovieBandits.com is a business-to-consumer trading service, with a
warehouse of 250,000 DVDs, as opposed to a peer-based trading
service like PeerFlix. Users purchase new or used DVDs and pay a
$2.99 shipping and handling fee for the first title, plus $1.25 for
each additional title per order -- and may also sell unwanted titles
to the company. The service has been in beta testing since January,
and now claims 10,000 registered customers; Perkovich said he
expects to reach an average of 5,000 trades per month by May 2006.

Atari Releases "Driver: Parallel Lines" Soundtrack on iTunes
New York - Atari said on Thursday that it has made the
in-game soundtrack to its "Driver: Parallel Lines" game available
exclusively as a download from Apple's iTunes Store. The soundtrack,
produced by Nimrod Productions, includes over 70 songs from multiple
eras, featuring artists such as The Temptations, Public Enemy,
Suicide, TV on the Radio and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Twenty-one of the
tracks from the game are now available on iTunes. Separately, Atari
said it plans to ship "Test Drive: Unlimited" for the PC in the fall
of 2006. Developed by Eden Games, the massively multiplayer title
will be playable both on Windows-based PCs and on Microsoft's Xbox
360 game console.

2K Games to Ship New Titles from Firaxis, Gas Powered Games
New York - 2K Games, a unit of Take-Two Interactive,
announced on Thursday that its Firaxis Games studio is developing "CivCity:
Rome" for the PC, in collaboration with Firefly Studios, for release
this summer. Other PC games in development at Firaxis include "Sid
Meier's Railroads" and "Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Warlords," an
expansion pack. Additionally, New York-based 2K Games said it has
acquired the rights from Gas Powered Games to publish selected
titles from the developer's "Dungeon Siege" game franchise. Under
the deal, 2K Games will publish "Dungeon Siege II: Broken World" for
PC this summer and "Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony" for Sony PSP in
the fall, in addition to the back catalog of Dungeon Siege titles.
