o CBS Breaks Streaming Media
Record on First Day of NCAA Tournament
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. - CBS SportsLine announced on Friday
that its March Madness on Demand free online video service set an
Internet record yesterday for a scheduled live entertainment or
sports event, serving over 268,000 simultaneous streams of first
round games from the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship.
In total, the company served streams to over 2 million users in the
first 24 hours of the event, and reported over 150,000 people in its
"waiting room" just after the first games started, awaiting
available bandwidth. "What we've done is complement the biggest
college sports event of the year with the largest known simultaneous
live viewing audience in the history of the Internet for an event of
this kind," said Larry Kramer, president of CBS Digital Media. CBS
said that MLB Advanced Media is providing it with delivery
technology, while content delivery networks Akamai Technologies and
Limelight Networks are providing video bandwidth support.
Advertisers supporting the free service include Marriott, Dell,
Lowe's, Pontiac and State Farm.

o Warner
Delays, Scales Back Release of First Batch of HD DVD Movies
Burbank, Calif. - Warner Home Video has announced that
technical issues have compelled the company to postpone and scale
back the release of its first batch of movie titles on Toshiba's
next-generation HD DVD format. According to The Hollywood Reporter,
Warner will now release just three films -- "Million Dollar Baby,"
"The Phantom of the Opera" and "The Last Samurai" -- on April 18,
instead of the 20 promised on March 28. The remaining titles are now
scheduled to ship in subsequent weeks. "We're using new copy
protection, new compression, new codecs, and we want to make sure
the product that goes out is flawless," Warner's senior vice
president of market management, Stephen Nickerson, told THR. Warner
will begin shipping catalog HD DVD titles in July, when its first
titles on Sony's rival Blu-ray Disc format are also slated for
release.

o MPAA to
Showcase Studio-Friendly P2P Technologies at Trade Show
Los Angeles - The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)
plans next week to host a booth at the TelecomNEXT conference in Las
Vegas, at which it will demonstrate what it deems to be legitimate
digital content distribution technologies from Audible Magic,
BitTorrent, CacheLogic, Peer Impact, Red Swoosh and Thomson Content
Security. Audible Magic already has deals with Universal Music Group
and Sony Music to provide copyright filtering technology for
peer-to-peer networks, and is providing its technology to Snocap for
the forthcoming Mashboxx music file-sharing service; CacheLogic
provides P2P traffic management for ISP networks; and Thomson
Content Security provides copyright-protection technologies to the
studios. The other three firms provide peer-to-peer file-sharing
technologies: Red Swoosh speeds peer-to-peer content delivery for
media firms; Peer Impact operates a file-sharing network that has
already been utilized by NBC Universal; and BitTorrent, a
file-sharing technology that has been targeted by the MPAA -- which
labored to shut down BitTorrent tracker sites in Europe -- recently
agreed to filter illegal MPAA content from its website, and is now
in talks with the studios. BitTorrent also recently partnered with
U.K. cable operator ntl to trial a service that delivers movies and
TV shows. MPAA CEO Dan Glickman said these firms "are representative
of all those working on more ways to legally bring our movies to
consumers and developing innovative solutions for protecting
copyrights. By giving these innovators an opportunity to demonstrate
their advances, we hope to encourage them and others to continue
their important work."

Redwood City, Calif. - Electronic Arts, the developer and

its acquisition of Swedish game developer Digital Illusions CE

o Google's
$1 Billion Investment in AOL to Close in Second Quarter
Dulles, Va. - Internet search giant Google expects its $1
billion investment in America Online to close during the second
quarter, the company said in a filing with the Securities and
Exchange Commission. The companies initially agreed to the deal,
under which Google will acquire a 5% stake in AOL, in late December.
The close, however, has since been slightly delayed, primarily due
to ongoing negotiations about commercial agreements between the
companies, the filing indicated. The deal is expected to create a
cross-promotional atmosphere, with AOL selling ads that will be
displayed on the Google network, and Google promoting AOL's
properties in the sponsored links section of its search results.
