o Report: Microsoft Developing
Handheld Game Device
San Jose, Calif. - Microsoft is developing a handheld
video game device that would also play movies and music, sources
familiar with the project told the San Jose Mercury News. The
sources told The Merc that Microsoft vice president J. Allard is
leading the project, which also includes Xbox 360 system designer
Greg Gibson and Xbox finance chief Bryan Lee. The product may not
come to market for another year or two, and would enter a market
that already features stiff competition from similar products from
Apple, Sony and Nintendo. It would likely be able to play games
developed for the original Xbox, though, establishing a large
library of titles that would be available at launch.

Satellite Radio Settles Recordable Radio Dispute with Universal
Music
New York - Sirius Satellite Radio, a provider of
subscription radio programming with 4 million subscribers, has
settled a dispute with major record label Universal Music Group over
a Sirius radio receiver that can record 50 hours of music played on
the service, the Los Angeles Times reported. The Recording Industry
Association of America (RIAA) even petitioned Congress on the
matter, saying that such digital radio recorders hurt record sales.
Sources told the Times that Sirius agreed to limit the number of
Sirius S50 radios it manufactures, and will also pay Universal Music
an undisclosed sum. The agreement could lead to similar resolutions
of disputes over satellite radio receivers with recording
capabilities that exist between Sirius -- as well as rival XM
Satellite Radio -- and other record labels.

o Report:
Sony PS3 to Dominate Game Console Market Through 2010
Scottsdale, Ariz. - Sony will continue to dominate the
video game console market through 2010, well into the
next-generation console cycle that includes the already-released
Microsoft Xbox 360 and forthcoming PlayStation 3 and Nintendo
Revolution, according to a forecast from market research firm
In-Stat. The firm predicts that the Sony PlayStation 3 will account
for just over 50% of the console installed base through 2010,
followed by the Xbox 360 (28.6%) and Revolution (21.2%). "Microsoft
will outship Nintendo in the next generation of consoles due to its
head start in launching, its strength in the North American market,
and its appeal to older gamers, a demographic that seems to widen
with each new generation of consoles," said In-Stat analyst Brian
O'Rourke.
