o French Lawmakers Approve Bill
Forcing Apple to Open iTunes to Rivals
Paris - French lawmakers on Tuesday gave preliminary
approval to a controversial bill that would require interoperability
between online copyright-protection technologies, essentially
forcing companies like Apple and Sony to make their iPods, iTunes
Stores and Walkman devices in France work with one another. The bill
now moves to the French Senate, which is expected to take up the
matter in May. "These clauses, which we hope will be taken up by
other countries, notably at the European level, should prevent the
emergence of a monopoly in the supply of online culture," said
Richard Cazenave and Bernard Carayon, National Assembly deputies
from the ruling UMP party. If the proposal becomes law, it's unclear
whether Apple, Sony and others will choose to release their
closely-guarded copyright-protection technologies to their
competitors, or simply shut down iTunes and similar operations in
France. "It is important to consumers to have the ability to move
songs between their various listening devices," John Kennedy,
chairman and CEO of the International Federation of the Phonographic
Industry, told the Associated Press. Other segments of the French
copyright bill would lower the penalties for downloading music and
movies from unauthorized file-sharing networks to between $50 and
$180. Those who circumvent copy-protection systems would be fined
$4,600, while those who distribute illicit file-sharing software
would still face jail time and up to $365,000 in fines.

o Microsoft
Boosts Xbox 360 Distribution, Announces Spring Game Line-up
Redmond, Wash. - Microsoft announced on Tuesday that it
will distribute two to three times the number of Xbox 360 consoles
currently being shipped each week to retailers worldwide, having
added third manufacturing partner Celestica to existing producers
Wistron and Flextronics. "Today we have turned a major corner," said
Peter Moore, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Interactive
Entertainment Business; the company suffered from supply shortages
during the holiday shopping season that left some pre-orders
unfulfilled. Microsoft plans to launch the console in Australia and
New Zealand later this week. The company also announced the spring
line-up of new titles for Xbox 360 -- including games from
Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, KOEI, 2K Games, Square Enix, Eidos, THQ,
Rockstar Games, Konami and Activision -- that will make for a total
of 80 titles available by June. Microsoft also said that its Xbox
Live Marketplace, where Xbox owners can download content over a
broadband connection to their game consoles, has now reached more
than 10 million downloads.

o Survey:
Adults Spend More Time Gaming Than Teens
Arlington, Va. - About one-third of adult gamers spend 10
or more hours per week playing video games, compared with just 11%
of teens (12-17), according to a survey conducted by the Consumer
Electronics Association (CEA), a trade group of consumer electronics
makers. The survey also found that PC games dominate the adult game
market, which could be supported by the fact that female gamers --
who prefer free online games -- outnumber male gamers in the 25-34
age demographic. "The fact that adults are racking up more gaming
hours than teens is startling, but there are several associated
findings that shed light on this," said CEA senior analyst Steve
Koenig. "Interestingly, a greater percentage of 12-14 year olds
spend time gaming than older teens ages 15-17. Older teens simply
may not have the free time for extra hours of gaming or they could
be gaming on wireless handsets since 81 percent of teens own or use
a wireless phone." Additionally, CEA predicts that 19 million
next-generation video game consoles will be sold during their first
year on the market, generating $8 billion in revenue between Sony,
Microsoft and Nintendo.

Online Advertising Rose 73% to $1.98 Billion in 2005
London - Online advertising in the U.K. soared by 73% in
2005, taking ad revenues to more than $1.98 billion and dwarfing the
amount of advertising spent on magazines, radio and cinema,
according to a report from the World Advertising Research Centre (WARC)
on behalf of the Advertising Association. The report found that
spending on online classified advertising increased by 78% to more
than $1.31 billion over the same period, while online display

o Newspaper
Group Launches Campaign Aimed at Luring Back Advertisers
Vienna, Va. - Amid declining circulation and advertising,
due in large part to the proliferation of the Internet, more than
700 U.S. newspapers have teamed to launch a massive ad campaign
designed to lure back advertisers. Developed by the Newspaper
Association of America in conjunction with the Martin Agency, the
campaign, which will run both in print and online, stresses the
value that newspapers offer advertisers. It also trumpets consumer
research showing that newspaper advertising "is a destination for
most consumers, not a distraction to be avoided." "We're exploding
the myth that newspapers are old school or static," said John
Kimball, the chief marketing officers of the NAA. In one of the ads,
for instance, the question is posed: "What made freedom of the press
so important to the founders?" Answer: "Maybe it was the coupons."

Millions Flock to College Basketball Sites For March Madness
Reston, Va. - College basketball fans flocked to the
Internet in droves last week to view scores, brackets and, for the
first time, live streaming game broadcasts, according to new
statistics released by market research firm comScore Media Metrix.
On Thursday, nearly 8 million visitors -- or more than 7 percent of
the total U.S. Internet population -- accessed NCAA men's basketball
content through the most popular sites, including
NCAASports.com, ESPN, CBS Sportsline, Yahoo Sports, AOL Sports and
Fox Sports on MSN. More than 60% of those people accessed the sites
from work, and nearly three-quarters of those accessing free online
game broadcasts on NCAASports.com did so from the office.
