o DVD Copy Control Assn. Seeks Technology to "Back-Up" Often-Cracked CSS

Morgan Hill, Calif. -- The DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA), which
licenses the CSS (Content Scramble System) technology to DVD disc and
player manufacturers, has announced that it is seeking additional
copyright protection technologies to complement the often-hacked CSS
anti-copying technology. The organization is asking technology developers
to submit proposals for a "watermark or embedded technology for use as a
"back-up" to the protections against unauthorized copying of audio-visual
content provided by the CSS technology and licensing," according to a
request for submissions posted on its website. The Motion Picture
Association of America is currently involved in litigation against 2600
Magazine, for the publication's linking to DeCSS, a code that can crack
the CSS security technology. Many programmers have written their own
versions of the DVD-cracking code, some of which are short enough in
length to be printed out on a business card.

o Fragmented Market to Affect Interactive Television Growth in the U.S.

New York -- Interactive television will outpace PCs in terms of how
Americans log on to the Internet, with growth increasing 83 percent per
year through 2005 in the U.S. compared with nine percent growth for
PC-based online access, according to a report published Monday by Jupiter
Media Metrix. The report also says that because infrastructure and
technology for iTV will not initially be available in every market,
interactive television will be a fragmented industry in the U.S. "Even
though iTV will be a viable platform for developers, content programmers
and advertisers alike, the market needs to understand that this audience
will be fragmented -- by geography and by technology," said Jupiter
analyst Lydia Loizides. New York-based Jupiter also said that it does not
expect a single technology platform for iTV -- currently offered by
MicrosoftTV, Liberate, OpenTV and PowerTV -- to emerge as a leader.

o MSNBC.com: AOL to Launch Cable TV Music Video Channel

New York -- AOL Time Warner is reportedly planning to launch a cable TV
music video channel to compete with MTV and VH-1, MSNBC.com reported. The channel could be used to promote Warner Music artists, and online
components could compel viewers to go to AOL websites offering artist
chats and music downloads. MSNBC.com said that the channel -- which is
expected to launch by the end of 2002 -- would likely be run by Jamie
Kellner, chief executive of AOL Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting group.

o Search Engine Google Gets Funding from New Chairman

Mountain View, Calif. -- Search engine provider Google announced on Monday
that Dr. Eric E. Schmidt, 45, currently chairman and CEO of Novell, Inc.,
has joined Google's board of directors as chairman. The company also said
that Schmidt has made an undisclosed "significant financial investment" in
Google. Company chairman Sergey Brin will step down but retain his role as
president of Google.

o Comedians, EMusic Co-founder Launch Comedy CD Label Laugh.com

New York -- A group of comedians have teamed with Bob Kohn, co-founder and
chairman of downloadable music retailer EMusic to launch Laugh.com, a
company that will sell comedy CDs both on and off-line, and offer free
audio and video comedy clips on the Internet. Comedian George Carlin is
expected to announce the company on tonight's "The Late Show with David
Letterman." Besides Carlin, Laugh.com's comedian partners include The
Jerky Boys, Milton Berle, Red Buttons, Phyllis Diller, Rich Little and
Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling from the Howard Stern show. The company
plans to release 12 comedy CDs in the next three months, the first of
which being prank-call makers The Jerky Boys' "The Jerky Tapes," which is
scheduled for release on April 12. Laugh.com announced partnerships with
Koch International, Everad and FluxNetwork, and plans to offer
joke-of-the-day subscription services to wireless providers.
