o Sony Planning iTunes-Like Download
Store for Movies Santa Monica, Calif. -- Sony Pictures Digital
Entertainment plans to digitize its top 500 films and make them
available from digital online stores similar to iTunes within the
next year, CNET News.com reported. Speaking at the Digital Hollywood
conference in Los Angeles, Sony Pictures senior vice president
Michael Arrieta said Sony will develop its own digital store from
which consumers can purchase and download films on their PCs that
they will permanently own, and will also make movies available on
flash memory cards for mobile phones. "We want to set business
models, pricing models, distribution models like (Apple CEO Steve)
Jobs did for music, but for the film industry," said Arrieta. "I'm
trying to create the new 'anti-Napster.'"

o Chinese Gamer
Stabbed to Death Over Sale of Borrowed Virtual Sword
Beijing -- A Chinese man has stabbed another man to death over
the sale of a virtual sword used in the massively multiplayer online
game "Legend of Mir 3," Reuters reported, citing a report in the
newspaper China Daily. Qiu Chengwei, 41, stabbed Zhu Caoyuan to
death after learning that Zhu had sold the "dragon saber" that Qiu
had loaned him -- pocketing about $870 on the deal. Qiu initially
went to police when he learned of the sale of the sword, but was
told it was not real property and thus not protected under the law.
"Zhu promised to hand over the cash but an angry Qui lost patience
and attacked Zhu at his home, stabbing him in the left chest with
great force and killing him," police told the court.

o TiVo Launches
New Interactive TV Ad Feature
Alviso, Calif. -- TiVo, a provider of digital video recorder
software and services, has recently begun testing a new advertising
feature with a limited number of its subscribers. The ads appear for
just a half-second, when users fast-forward through TV commercials;
if interested in the ad -- which covers about a quarter of the
screen -- viewers can press a button on their TV remotes and be
taken to additional marketing materials. TiVo said the new ad format
will eventually be available on all of its set-tops, including those
deployed by partner DirecTV. CEO Mike Ramsay also recently said the
company plans to launch a digital video recorder service in Japan
next year, with the establishment of a Japanese division and
offices.

o Survey:
Americans Want New Technologies Like HDTV, but for Right Price
Rochester, N.Y. -- About 27% of adults say that they are likely
to buy a high-definition television set within the next year, the
highest percentage among seven electronic devices tested in a new
survey by Harris Interactive. And although next-generation DVD
players have not yet been marketed in the U.S., 24% of American
adults surveyed indicate interest in buying one within the next
year. "While considerable proportions of American adults are
attracted to these technologies, the survey also shows that their
interest may be tempered by the reality of the affordability of
those products," said Harris' Greg Durkin.

o Internet
Audience Measurement Firm comScore Expands Into Europe
Reston, Va. -- comScore Networks, a provider of Internet audience
measurement services, on Thursday unveiled plans for a major
multinational expansion through a newly consolidated comScore Europe
business unit. The company has named Bob Ivins, a veteran of the
marketing and media research industries, as the managing director of
comScore Europe, based in London. Most recently, Ivins was the
director of research for Yahoo Europe. "Client demand for our
services in Europe has grown rapidly in recent years, and the time
is right to offer an expanded set of capabilities," said Magid
Abraham, the president and CEO of comScore. The new unit will
deliver consumer research and analysis services to Europe-based
clients, as well as serve the European interests of clients based in
North America and elsewhere.

(New York) XM Satellite Radio chairman Gary Parsons said on
Wednesday that the company is looking to have satellite radio
reception built into a range of additional consumer electronics,
such as MP3 players, DVD players and video game consoles, Reuters
reported. "We would see the ability for consumer electronics
manufacturers to perpetuate the availability of XM's service down to
clock radios and DVD players," Parsons told an investors'
conference. "Much of our effort goes toward helping others design,
build, and implement XM functionality so in fact it becomes very
pervasive."

(New York) CBS announced on Thursday that it has named

(Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) Wurld Media, the developer of a

legal content, announced on Thursday that it has expanded the
ongoing beta test of its Peer Impact service, allowing current users
to invite friends to join in anticipation of the public beta launch

will add Promosquad's HitPredictor predictive music chart in it
expanded monthly music section, Listen2This. Also featured in
Billboard, the chart utilizes an online community of listeners who
preview new songs and give them ratings, in exchange for free gifts
like CDs and DVDs. Promosquad claims its system has predicted
hundreds of hits, including the Killers' "Mr. Brightside," Kelly
Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and Mario's "Let Me Love You."

(London) According to a new report by the Wireless World Forum,
U.K. kids on average receive their first mobile phone by the time
they are eight years old. The Mobile Youth 2005 report found that
more than 13 million young people in the U.K. own a mobile phone,
with approximately 9 million of those being under the age of 15.
About 95% of British kids under the age of 14 received their mobile
phones from their parents. Ironically, the report also found that
about 63% of parents were worried about the possible health risks to
their children of using mobile phones, while 72% expressed concern
that mobile phones were leading their children into serious debt.

(Los Angeles) John Carmack, the veteran game developer credited
with titles including "Doom" and "Quake," has announced via his blog
that he is currently working to develop a cell phone version of
"Doom." The title will be a roleplaying game rather than a
first-person shooter, like the PC versions of "Doom." "I decided to
work on 'DoomRPG' -- sort of 'Bard's Tale' meets 'Doom'. Step based
smooth sliding/turning tile movement and combat works out well for
the phone input buttons, and exploring a 3D world through the cell
phone window is pretty neat," Carmack wrote. The title will be
developed at Mesquite, Texas-based Fountainhead Entertainment, and
will likely be published by Jamdat Mobile.

reported. The PocketMac application can also sync the PSP with other

(New York) The New York Times on Thursday reviewed the three
major online DVD rental services: Netflix, Blockbuster and Wal-Mart.
Netflix counts 3 million subscribers, charges $18 per month and
stocks 40,000 DVD titles, while Blockbuster (750,000 subscribers)
charges $15 per month and has 35,000 titles and Wal-Mart's service
(subscriber data undisclosed) costs $17.36 monthly and offers 16,000
selections. The review is fairly glowing for both Netflix and
Blockbuster, but says of Wal-Mart's service, "unless you believe in
rooting for the underdog -- has that word ever appeared in the same
sentence with Wal-Mart before? -- there's no good reason to choose
it."

(London) U.K. news site The Register reported on Thursday that
Banhof, a large Swedish ISP that was targeted in an anti-piracy raid
where four of its servers were seized, is considering legal action
against Swedish anti-piracy group Antipiratbyran -- which has
admitted that it used a paid informant and member of the hacker
community to infiltrate Banhof. The ISP's CEO told The Register he
believes the pirated materials found on its servers were placed
there by the informant, dubbed "Rogue." Antipiratbyran attorney
Henrek Ponten told The Register that since the raid, "the
[file-sharing] scene in Sweden is totally quiet right now." Ponten
added that Antipiratbyran's offices have come under attack, and he
himself has received death threats.
