o Movielink Offers First Permanent
Movie Downloads From Major Studios
Santa Monica, Calif. - Movielink, a studio-backed Internet
video-on-demand service, announced on Monday the launch of the
industry's first download-to-own service for the major movie
studios, which will let users for the first time purchase permanent
movie downloads. The service will offer Universal Studios' "Brokeback
Mountain" for purchase and download on April 4, the same day it is
released on DVD; Movielink will offer similar day-and-date downloads
for Sony's "Fun With Dick and Jane," and other titles from
Paramount, MGM, Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox. Movie downloads
will be sold to retailers like Movielink for wholesale DVD prices,
with retailers free to set their own retail prices. Movielink said
its titles will start at $8.99; new releases will cost around $20,
in line with DVD pricing. All downloads will be delivered in
Microsoft's Windows Media format and use the company's
copy-protection technology; movies will be viewable on a TV through
a home networking connection, and may be saved to DVD in Windows
Media format. Sony and fellow studio Lionsgate said they would
additionally offer movie downloads through CinemaNow, a Movielink
competitor owned by Lionsgate. Other online retailers such as Apple,
Amazon.com, Netflix and Wal-Mart are also expected to make deals
with the studios to launch similar download-to-own services.

o America
Online Officially Shortens Name to "AOL"
Dulles, Va. - Following 15 years under its previous name,
America Online, a division of Time Warner, on Monday officially
shortened its name to simply "AOL," in part to remove any possible
cultural barriers from its various international operations. Jon
Miller, the chairman and CEO of the Time Warner unit, said that the
change reflects the company's expanded mission outside of America,
plus "consumers in the U.S. and around the world already know us by
our initials." AOL also runs portals and web services in the U.K.,
France, Germany, Brazil, Japan, Canada, Australia, Mexico, Argentina
and Puerto Rico, as well as in several different languages. AOL also
said that its legal structure has changed, from a corporation to a
limited liability company.

o Court
Throws Out Michigan Law Restricting Video Game Sales
Washington - The U.S. District Court for the Eastern
District of Michigan has thrown out a Michigan state law that
restricted the sale or rental of mature or adult-rated video games
to minors. Judge George Caram Steeh placed a permanent injunction
against implementation of the bill, which was signed into law by
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm in September -- calling it
unconstitutional. The Michigan law would have fined retailers who
sold such games to minors $5,000. "Judge Steeh's ruling represents a
sweeping rejection of the state's claims regarding the harmful
effects of violent video games and we will move immediately for
reimbursement of the substantial legal fees incurred in this court
fight which the state could have, and should have, never triggered,"
said Douglas Lowenstein, president of the Entertainment Software
Association (ESA), a video game industry trade group. Courts have
consistently ruled thus far that laws banning the sale of video
games to minors are unconstitutional restrictions on First Amendment
free speech rights, having overturned similar laws in Illinois,
California and Washington.

o AOL Launches
New Mobile Browsing Service
Dulles, Va. - AOL on Monday unveiled a new mobile browsing
service designed to automatically adapt Web pages for mobile
screens. The company said that the service, which can be used by
wireless subscribers with Web-enabled phones, has been integrated
into its various mobile search services. The launch was just one of
several key wireless announcement announcements for AOL on Monday.
The company also said that it has launched a new wireless version of
its AOL.com portal for Sprint subscribers and debuted a new
Web-enabled service for MapQuest. AOL said that a new service from
MapQuest will soon allow users to access voice-guided, turn-by-turn
directions from their cell phones.

o Report:
Game Console Online Downloads to Generate $3.8 Billion by 2011
Oyster Bay, N.Y. - The market for downloading games and
other paid content directly to video game consoles is projected to
grow from less than $1 million in 2005 to over $3.8 billion by 2011,
fueled by advanced online game services for the next-generation Xbox
360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Revolution, according to a report
from market research firm ABI Research. The firm predicts that
services will soon migrate from fee-based models where gamers pay
for access to the service to conduits for direct sales of games and
other media to the consoles. Sony plans to launch PNP (PlayStation
Network Platform), an online gaming platform for its PlayStation 3
similar to Microsoft's Xbox Live, that will enable multiplayer
gaming and content downloads; Nintendo has similar plans for its
Virtual Console service for the Revolution. "Online gaming for
consoles and handhelds is entering its golden age," said ABI
Research analyst Michael Wolf. "While some online console gaming
services, such as MMOGs, will continue to require monthly or annual
fees, the clear direction for the future is content delivery.
Advertising will also become an increasingly important business
component as the number of online gamers increases dramatically over
the next few years."
