o Report: 29% of iPod, MP3 Player
Owners Have Downloaded a Podcast Washington -- Of the estimated
more than 22 million American adults who own an iPod or other
digital music player, 6 million or 29% have downloaded a "podcast"
audio program from the Internet, according to a new survey from the
Pew Internet and American Life Project. Most podcasts consist of
talk radio programs produced by either amateurs or professional
media groups; NPR recently launched a slate of podcasts for most of
its popular radio programs. Free podcast software is first
downloaded to a PC, which may then be programmed to automatically
download MP3 files of audio programs and sync them to a connected
iPod or other player. The Pew survey also found that nearly half of
iPod owners ages 18-28 have downloaded podcasts, compared with 20%
of owners over age 29.

(Sydney) ZDNet Australia on Monday reported on the popularity in
Australia of using the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing
application to download episodes of U.S. TV programs, which
Australian broadcasters purposefully delay from airing to increase
demand. "These delays provide a window of opportunity for viewers to
upload TV programs after their American broadcast date, thereby
making them available to viewers outside of the U.S., and viewers
within the U.S. who may have missed the program," Alex Malik, a
former Australian record industry lawyer and author of a report on
the issue, told ZDNet Australia. "While there are no accurate
Australian BitTorrent usage figures, anecdotal evidence and reports
from online forums suggest that Australians are downloading TV
programs in large quantities."

(Washington) The Associated Press recently reported on companies
that have cropped up to provide legal campus digital media download
services, including Ruckus Network, Cdigix, Sea Blue Media, Napster
and RealNetworks. The university market is especially important to
major record label Sony BMG, which recently provided the University
of North Carolina with $150,000 to launch such a service, and has
paid the entire bill at some schools during a trial semester. "We're
reaching into our pockets," Sony BMG CEO Andrew Lack told AP. "At a
certain point, the universities have to step up, too, but this is
about an investment in the future." William Raduchel, CEO of Ruckus
Network added, "If kids build a habit to not pay for media, that is
a habit that will persist maybe for their entire lives."
