o IFPI Announces 2,000 New Music File-Swapper Lawsuits in 10 Countries

London - Nearly 2,000 new copyright infringement lawsuits have been filed against alleged music file-swappers in ten countries. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) announced the new wave of civil and criminal actions in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Iceland, Italy, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland, against individuals who have uploaded tracks on file-sharing networks including Kazaa, eDonkey, BitTorrent, Limewire and WinMX. The IFPI said those targeted include a German judge, a British local councilor and a Finnish carpenter. The international record industry trade group has so far taken legal action against more than 5,500 individuals in 18 countries outside the U.S., with hundreds having paid an average of $3,227 to settle the litigation. "This is a significant escalation in our worldwide campaign against illegal file-sharing," said IFPI chairman and CEO John Kennedy. "This campaign started in major music markets where sales were falling sharply; now these legal actions have spread to smaller markets in countries like Portugal where it is not an exaggeration to say the future of the whole national market, and local artists, is at stake."

Seoul - Korean consumer electronics firm Samsung announced on Tuesday that it will delay the U.S. launch of its first Blu-ray Disc next-generation DVD player by a month to complete final testing, and will now ship the device in late June, Reuters reported. Rival Toshiba last week began selling the first player for its proprietary HD DVD format in Japan, and plans to begin selling HD DVD players in the U.S. in April for between $499 and $799. Samsung's BD-P1000 will cost about $1,000.
