o Report: Piracy in China, Russia Cost U.S. Firms $4 Billion in 2005

Washington - China and Russia are the two biggest piracy havens in the world for U.S. entertainment industry products, responsible for an estimated $4 billion in losses in 2005, according to a report from the bipartisan Congressional International Anti-Piracy Caucus.
The Caucus said that piracy costs the U.S. an estimated 150,000 jobs and $1 billion in lost tax revenue. Caucus member Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) described Russian president Vladimir Putin as a "dunce" for not protecting intellectual property, Reuters reported. Biden added, "Piracy in these countries is largely the result of a lack of political will to confront the problem." The lawmakers pressed China to heighten penalties for piracy and step up its crackdown on pirate facilities. Two members of the Caucus also introduced a resolution on Wednesday urging the U.S. not to complete agreements leading to Russian membership in the World Trade Organization until the country steps up its own anti-piracy efforts.

London - European online DVD rental services Lovefilm and Video Island (ScreenSelect.co.uk) announced on Thursday their intention to merge, giving the combined company a based of 400,000 subscribers and an estimated 17% of the total U.K. DVD rental market.
