o Report: Piracy in China, Russia
Cost U.S. Firms $4 Billion in 2005
Washington - China and Russia are the two biggest piracy
havens in the world for U.S. entertainment industry products,
responsible for an estimated $4 billion in losses in 2005, according
to a report from the bipartisan Congressional International
Anti-Piracy Caucus.
The Caucus said that piracy costs the U.S. an estimated 150,000 jobs
and $1 billion in lost tax revenue. Caucus member Sen. Joe Biden
(D-Del.) described Russian president Vladimir Putin as a "dunce" for
not protecting intellectual property, Reuters reported. Biden added,
"Piracy in these countries is largely the result of a lack of
political will to confront the problem." The lawmakers pressed China
to heighten penalties for piracy and step up its crackdown on pirate
facilities. Two members of the Caucus also introduced a resolution
on Wednesday urging the U.S. not to complete agreements leading to
Russian membership in the World Trade Organization until the country
steps up its own anti-piracy efforts.

Sues Microsoft for Patent Infringement in Xbox 360 Technology
San Diego - Lucent Technologies has filed a patent
infringement lawsuit against Microsoft, over video technology found
in the company's Xbox 360 video game console. Lucent claims the Xbox
360's "'out of the box' MPEG-2 decoding capability" violates a 1993
patent issued to the company describing "Adaptive Coding and
Decoding of Frames and Fields of Video," and is seeking an
injunction against the use of the technology, in addition to
unspecified damages. "We have a case. Otherwise it wouldn't be in

Online DVD Rental Firms Lovefilm, Video Island to Merge
London - European online DVD rental services Lovefilm and
Video Island (ScreenSelect.co.uk) announced on Thursday their
intention to merge, giving the combined company a based of 400,000
subscribers and an estimated 17% of the total U.K. DVD rental
market. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The new
company will be called Lovefilm, and will offer more than 70,000
film titles, and 1.2 million DVD and video game titles, in addition
to a video-on-demand service. Following the merger, European digital
film distributor Arts Alliance Media will remain the largest
shareholder of Lovefilm. In addition to the U.K., the company offers
rental services in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The companies expect
their merger will enable them to "exploit synergies on marketing,
technology, distribution and operations to grow profits faster and
accelerate expansion across Continental Europe," and be "more
competitive against US rivals such as Amazon, Blockbuster and
potentially Netflix." Current partners, some of whom offer
