o Survey: U.S. Cell Phone Owners Not Using Multimedia, But Would Like To

Washington - A study of U.S. cell phone owners has found that mobile maps top the list of desired features, followed by instant messaging, search functionality and e-mail. The survey, conducted by the Associated Press, AOL and the Pew Internet & American Life Project, found that a third of cell phone owners (35%) already use text-messaging -- a figure that jumps to two-thirds (65%) among those ages 18-29 -- while 13% said they'd like to add the feature. Overall, 65% of cell owners said they had purchased wallpaper or ringtones, compared with 85% of 18-29 year-olds; 8% overall said they had used their phones to vote in a contest such as "American Idol". Among newer multimedia services, the survey found that 6% of cell owners have used their phones to play music, while 19% would like the feature; 7% had used a phone to search for movie listings, weather or stock prices, while 24% would like the feature; 2% had watched video or mobile TV programs, while 14% were interested in the feature; and 4% had accessed mobile maps, while 47% would like the feature.

San Jose, Calif. - Online payments provider PayPal this week introduced a new text message-based payment service for U.S. and Canadian consumers, with firms including 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Bravo, MTV and the NBA already signed on to the offering. "With the overwhelming popularity of mobile phones, the time has never been better for the merging of ecommerce and wireless devices," said PayPal president Jeff Jordan. "PayPal already has more than 100 million accounts worldwide, and our customers have already entrusted their personal and financial information to PayPal. Now, making payments is as easy as sending a text message anytime, from anywhere for the millions of customers that prefer to use PayPal." The service will allow companies to feature a Text to Buy logo in their advertising campaigns, with a corresponding code that consumers can type into their phones to purchase goods and services through their established PayPay accounts.

o CNET News.com: U.S. Broadband Pipes Not Wide Enough for HD Streaming

San Francisco - CNET News.com reported on Friday that high-definition video streaming, which requires twice the bandwidth of standard-definition streaming, will likely not be offered in the U.S. anytime soon. "HD files tend to be too large to easily stream or download over typical American broadband connections," Joe Laszlo, senior broadband analyst for Jupiter Research, told News.com. "Our 1.5 megabyte connections are great for music, OK for lower-quality video but fairly unacceptable for HD video...I don't think we'll see a lot of HD content." While the typical broadband connection offers 2 to 3 megabits per second, the minimum bandwidth needed for HD is 5mbps.
