o Jury in MP3.com Case Says it Meant to Award $3 Million, Not $300K

New York -- Jurors who were reported to have awarded indie label TVT
Records $300,000 for copyright infringements by MP3.com say that they
erred in their calculations -- and meant to award a $3 million settlement,
Bloomberg News reported on Monday. Jurors said that they alerted the judge
in the trial of the error after seeing press reports of the relatively
small damages awarded -- TVT had sought $8.5 million in damages from
MP3.com. The companies were called back into court by the judge on Monday
morning to address the purported oversight. MP3.com has paid over $150
million to settle similar copyright infringement cases with the major
labels and National Music Publishers Association; the company still has
pending lawsuits from a number of other indie record labels as well.

o Sony, Accenture Lead $34 Million Round for WildTangent

Redmond, Wash. -- WildTangent, a developer of technology for 3D games on
the Internet, announced on Monday that it has raised $34 million in its
third round of venture capital financing. New investors Sony Pictures
Digital Entertainment and Accenture Technology Ventures led the round;
ATI, Greylock, International Data Group, Madrona Venture Group, Millennium
Technology Ventures and Washington Mutual also participated.
Washington-based WildTangent will use the funding for product and
technology development, as well as for expansion. The company raised $17
million in March of 2000.

o NBC to Acquire All Outstanding NBCi Stock, Will Shut the Portal Down

New York -- Television network NBC announced on Monday that it will
purchase all outstanding stock of its Internet portal, NBCi, and will shut
the business down. NBC will pay about $138 million for NBCi, based on a
share price of $2.19. The company said that "recent changes in the portal
and online advertising market" prompted the purchase. NBCi will
immediately begin laying off employees and scale down the business. "This
was a hard decision, but in the end we have determined that this course of
action is best for the company's public stockholders," said Will Lansing,
CEO of NBCi. "They will be receiving a substantial premium over the
current share price, in an environment in which only top tier portal
services are even close to being profitable." NBC also operates websites
including news site MSNBC.com and financial site CNBC.com.

o Universal Music Group to Acquire Digital Music Retailer EMusic

Los Angeles -- Universal Music Group, a division of Vivendi Universal,
announced on Monday that it will acquire EMusic, an online retailer of
downloadable music, in a transaction valued at about $25 million. Redwood
City-based EMusic has negotiated licenses with a large number of
independent record labels to sell digital downloads of songs online; the
company also owns the RollingStone.com and DownBeat.com domains. The
company's approximately 165,000 songs are expected to be included in
Universal's planned music subscription joint venture with Sony, dubbed
Duet. "We believe that this transaction is in the best interests of our
stockholders," said Gene Hoffman, EMusic president and CEO. "The addition
of EMusic and RollingStone.com to Universal Music Group has some very
exciting potential for online music fans."

(San Francisco) Wired News featured an article on Monday on the topic of
digital archives. Many historians are concerned over how documents such as
those in the Library of Congress are being preserved, and look to digital
archiving as a possible answer. The article also brings up the example of
a current case between freelance writers and The New York Times, which
could result in making it more difficult for publications to establish
digital archives.
