o MySpace Appoints Former U.S. Prosecutor as Chief Security Officer

Santa Monica, Calif. - Social networking site MySpace, a unit of Fox Interactive Media, announced on Tuesday that it has appointed Hemanshu Nigam as chief security officer, who will oversee safety, education and privacy programs as well as law enforcement affairs for both MySpace and other Fox Interactive Media properties. Nigam previously served in a similar role at Microsoft, and has been a federal prosecutor and an advisor to the White House on cyberstalking. MySpace, which now claims more than 68 million members worldwide, has come under fire lately from parents' groups and various schools, and also received negative press for several incidents where sexual predators assaulted minors they met on MySpace. The Santa Monica, Calif.-based company also touted the steps it has taken to increase privacy and security for its members. These include setting a minimum member age of 14, and deleting underage profiles; limiting public access to profiles of members under 16; limiting access to adult-themed groups to those 18 or older; working with all levels of law enforcement; and providing parents with links to free Internet filtering software. The company also said it partnered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Advertising Council on a series of national public service announcements that promote online safety.

o Trade Groups for Video Game, Home Video Sales and Rentals to Merge

Encino, Calif. - Two industry trade groups representing retailers and distributors of DVDs and video games -- the Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association (IEMA) and Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) -- announced on Tuesday their intention to merge. While IEMA members, which include companies that rent and sell video games, account for 75% of the $10 billion annual U.S. interactive entertainment business, the VSDA represents over 1,000 companies and 12,500 retail outlets within the $24 billion home video industry. "The merger will create a more efficient and influential organization to serve the needs of video and video game retailers and distributors," said IEMA chairman Rick Vergara. "The interests of the membership of the two associations are so closely aligned that we expect a seamless integration."

Tokyo - Japanese electronics firm Fujitsu announced on Tuesday that it will introduce its first PCs with Sony's next-generation Blu-ray Disc drives in June in Japan, becoming the first company to release a Blu-ray-compatible PC, Reuters reported. Fujitsu will also in June begin selling PCs equipped with rival HD DVD technology, developed by Toshiba. Fujitsu's Blu-ray PC, which comes with a 37-inch LCD screen, is expected to sell for about $5,000 in Japan. Sony plans to release its own VAIO PCs with Blu-ray Disc drives sometime in early summer. o Danny DeVito, ClickStar to Launch Broadband Documentary Channel

Santa Monica, Calif. - ClickStar, a broadband entertainment service whose backers include actor Morgan Freeman and Intel, has announced that actor Danny DeVito will launch Jersey Docs, a ClickStar channel featuring documentaries from around the world. "These stories never get seen. They go on the circuit, but I always have to go hunting for them," DeVito told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're going to democratize documentaries for the people… Whether they're globally or sociologically or politically motivated, we all love comedy and drama, but the human experience has all that and more." While DeVito will provide artistic direction, ClickStar will handle all aspects of documentary acquisition and distribution for Jersey Docs, which will enable users with Intel Viiv-based PCs to watch the films on their home televisions.

o Report: Consumer Adoption of New Media to Boost Media Revenues

Monterey, Calif. - Consumer adoption of new media technologies will significantly boost media revenues in 2006 and beyond, with the online ad market projected to grow from $14.5 billion in revenue this year to $33.4 billion by 2016, according to a report from market research firm Kagan Research. In addition to the 8.7% compound annual growth rate forecasted for online ad revenue, the firm also predicts gains in the wireless data and satellite radio industries. Wireless data services -- which include mobile song and ringtone downloads, and mobile TV -- will grow from $8.4 billion and 7% of total wireless service revenue in 2005, to $46.6 billion and 24% of all wireless revenue by 2014. For satellite radio, Kagan estimates that the cost for XM and Sirius to acquire new subscribers will drop from $95 per subscriber in 2005, to $49 in 2010 and $37 by 2014. "The survivors will be the ones who figure out how to embrace the new and bring their media into the digital age," said Kagan senior analyst Deana Myers.
