o Napster Licenses "Audio Fingerprinting" Technology from Relatable

Redwood City, Calif. -- Napster has licensed technology known as "audio
fingerprinting" from Virginia-based Relatable for use in its efforts to
filter unauthorized copyrighted songs from its service, as well as for its
planned subscription service for downloadable music. Audio fingerprinting
uniquely identifies a song file based on the acoustical properties of the
song itself, specifically the first 30 seconds of a track. Tricking the
technology would require a user to alter the actual sound file, instead of
merely changing the filename for the song -- which users have done to
evade Napster's other filtering measures. Redwood City-based Napster said
that its engineers are working with Relatable's engineers to refine the
technology for use on Napster.

o European Union Close to Imposing Tax on Music, Software Downloads

New York -- The European Union is close to imposing a tax on music and
software download on the Internet from countries not in the EU, Bloomberg
News reported on Friday. The 15 governments comprising the Union are
negotiating how to distribute revenue from the tax, which would be imposed
on users who pay to download music or software from non-EU countries,
including the U.S.

o Video Compression Developer DemoGraFX Raises $10 Million in First Round

Santa Monica, Calif. -- DemoGraFX, a developer of video compression
technology for digital cinema, has raised $10 million in its first round
of funding. Baker Capital was the sole participant in the round. Santa
Monica-based DemoGraFX was awarded $2 million in 1999 to begin developing
its "layered compression" system, which in addition to shrinking the size
of digital video files, includes faster rates of compression, as well as
encryption and watermarking for distribution; and real-time decompression
and decryption for exhibition in theaters and other venues. The company
will use the funds for marketing its products, and to increase its
engineering staff.

announced broad staff reduction, which did not specify which divisions
would be affected. The online division's cuts will be made mostly at
community discussion site Abuzz.com and Winetoday.com. New York Times
