o Sony Cuts Price of PlayStation 2
to $129
Foster City, Calif. - Sony Computer Entertainment America
announced on Thursday that it has discounted the price of its
PlayStation 2 video game console from $149 to $129, effective today.
The move from Sony was largely expected, as the company begins to
gear up for the release of the PlayStation 3 in November. To date,
more than 101 million PlayStation 2 units and approximately one
billion games for the console have shipped worldwide. Sony's console
also continues to lead Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube,
accounting for 55.6% of the U.S. market, according to NPD Group.
Sony intends to promote the new pricing with a variety of print,
online and in-store advertising.

Producer Vivid to Sell Burn-to-DVD Downloads on CinemaNow
Los Angeles - Adult entertainment firm Vivid Entertainment
announced that it plans next week to begin selling downloadable
movies that can be burned onto DVD through CinemaNow, a
video-on-demand site owned by Canadian film studio Lionsgate. Marina
del Rey, Calif.-based CinemaNow, which offers downloadable movies
without the DVD option from all the major studios, already offers
some adult titles on its service. The 30 Vivid titles offered will
cost about the same as a DVD ($19.95) and come with all special
features and cover art. The company that developed the technology
that allows just one DVD to be created from each downloaded movie,
All Adult Channel, is also owned and operated by CinemaNow. "In a
perfect world, it is a technology that could be accepted by
traditional content providers," CinemaNow CEO Curt Marvis told the
Los Angeles Times. "They might be a bit slower to adopt it because
they always are."

o Philips:
Patent Will Not Lead to Forced TV Commercial Viewing
New York - Responding to reports that technology it
invented could prevent TV viewers from skipping through commercials
when watching recorded TV shows, or changing the channel during
commercials in live broadcasts, consumer electronics firm Philips
released a statement Thursday denying the claims. "Philips never had
the intention to force viewers to watch ads against their will and
does not use this technology in any current Philips products, nor do
we have any plans to do so," the company said. "We developed a
system where the viewer can choose, at the beginning of a movie, to
either watch the movie without ads, or watch the movie with ads. It
is up to the viewer to take this decision, and up to the broadcaster
to offer the various services." However, the patent application
states that the invention "prevents a viewer of a direct (nonrecorded)
broadcast from switching channels when an advertisement is displayed
and prevents a viewer of a recorded program from fast-forwarding the
recorded program in order to skip past advertisements that were
recorded with the program. A viewer may either watch the
advertisements or pay a fee in order to be able to change channels
or fast-forward when the advertisements are being displayed."

o Sony to
Release DVD Walkman
Tokyo - Sony has announced plans to release the first
portable DVD player under its Walkman brand, a device about the size
of a DVD movie case with a 7-inch screen and stereo speaker cradle
that will sell for about $300. The D-VE7000S will play all CD and
DVD discs, including new dual-layer DVD formats. The DVD Walkman
will run for three hours on a full charge, or up to seven hours with
the screen's backlight in the off position. The device is slated to
go on sale in North America in May, and in Japan in early June.

o Report:
Wireless Laptops Still Bigger Than Internet Cell Phones in U.S.
New York - Despite the fact that accessing the Internet
via a mobile phone is now more popular than laptops with Wi-Fi in
many countries, mobile phone Internet usage is actually flattening
in markets such as the U.S. and Canada, according to a study from
market research firm Ipsos Insight. Four in ten Japanese browsed the
Internet via mobile phones in 2005 -- double the number that did in
2003 -- compared with 26% in the U.S. Mobile phones are now also
present in over 90% of the households in Japan, South Korea and
China, while mobile penetration in U.S. households stands at 75%.
Worldwide, 28% of mobile phone owners used their phones to access
the Internet in 2005, up from 25% at the end of 2004; Ipsos
attributed this growth to users ages 35 and up. "Accessing the
Internet on a wireless handheld device is no longer a novelty for
consumers in the major global economies," said Ipsos senior vice
president Brian Cruikshank. "It's becoming a common, everyday
occurrence for many people."

o Google,
Sony Pictures Team on Da Vinci Code Movie Promotion
Mountain View, Calif. - Google has partnered with Sony
Pictures Entertainment to promote the studio's upcoming "The Da
Vinci Code" movie through an interactive online game. To play, users
in the U.S., U.K. and Australia must register and have a Google
Gmail account and Google Homepage; one new time-based puzzle will
then be added to all players' Homepages each day through May 11.
Ten-thousand finalists who correctly answer all 24 puzzles will then
receive a "cryptex" -- styled after those featured in the Dan Brown
novel -- that they must use to solve another several puzzles. The
winner and three guests will get first-class trips to Paris, London,
Rome and New York, in addition to a selection of Sony consumer
electronics products. Google spokeswoman Eileen Rodriguez told CNET
News.com that this was the first time the company has ever teamed
with a movie studio on such a promotion.
