o AOL Time Warner Officially Launches iPublish.com

New York -- AOL Time Warner on Monday officially launched its digital
publishing venture, iPublish.com. The Time Warner Books subsidiary will
seek authors to submit original works to be published as e-books. The
electronic format books will also be available in print through
print-on-demand technology, which allows books to be printed in response
to individual requests. The company says the most successful works may
also garner national print runs. iPublish.com will release 50 titles per
month, and has already signed on authors like Nelson DeMille, Walter
Mosley and James Patterson to distribute their original works online. One
feature of the site asks writers to review three other user-submitted
works before they post their own original works for consideration.
iPublish.com will distribute e-books in a range of formats -- including
Microsoft Reader, Adobe Reader, Palm Reader and Gemstar eBook -- for a
suggested retail price of $14.95.

o Napster Judge Says Labels Must Provide Filenames to Block Songs

Los Angeles -- U.S. District Court Judge Marilyn Hall Patel on Friday
clarified the court's position on the form in which record labels must
submit their copyrighted songs to Napster in order to have them blocked
from the company's file-sharing service, Reuters reported. Napster and the
record labels have argued over whether or not the labels were required to
search for and submit actual filenames used on Napster, which correspond
to the songs they are demanding to have blocked from the service. The
labels have submitted a large number of songs to Napster without
corresponding filenames. In her memo, Judge Patel states that the labels'
belief that filenames are not always necessary
"requires reading more into the paragraph (opinion) than the Ninth Circuit
has made apparent." Another hour-long teleconference between the two
parties and court-appointed technical expert A.J. "Nick" Nichols is
scheduled for Thursday.

o Stan Lee Media Receives Financing During Chapter 11 Reorganization

Austin, Texas -- Venture firm Interfase Capital announced on Monday that
it is providing debtor-in-possession financing to Stan Lee Media for
operations during the company's reorganization. Los Angeles-based online
and off-line animation company Stan Lee Media -- founded by Spider-Man and
X-Men creator Stan Lee -- filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in
February. The company laid off all its staff and discontinued operations
shortly before Christmas. Austin-based Interfase Capital, which has funded
other online entertainment companies such as WildBrain.com, will take a
majority equity stake in the reorganized Stan Lee Media. Certain
executives of Stan Lee Media currently face a class action lawsuit from
shareholders, alleging the company misrepresented that it had secured
necessary financing and that executives misused funds.
