o Senate Judiciary Passes Intellectual Property Bills

Washington -- The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved a number of intellectual property-related bills, which will now be voted on by the entire Senate. Among them is a bill that would make it a crime to bring a camcorder into a movie theater for the purpose of pirating a movie; a similar bill passed in California saw its first arrests earlier this month and charges filed on Thursday. Another bill would expand the authority of the U.S. Justice Dept. in copyright infringement prosecutions, enabling it to file civil lawsuits against suspected pirates instead of solely criminal charges.

(San Francisco) CNET News.com recently reported on the appearance of media file-swappers on Internet2, a network set up by universities and researchers that was designed to be many times faster than the public Internet. One user reported there were 2,000 users from 100 different universities on the i2hub file-sharing network on Thursday afternoon. "The use policies for (the Internet2) backbone network are very clear -- that use of the network for illegal means is not allowed," Greg Wood, Internet2's director of communications, told News.com.

(San Francisco) The current issue of WIRED magazine features an article on the Motion Picture Association of America-sponsored anti-piracy education initiative, which so far this year has reached over half a million junior high students. The nonprofit Junior Achievement-designed curriculum, "What's the Diff?: A Guide to Digital Citizenship," asks students to role-play the parts of a producer, actor, set builder or computer user, and provides them with mostly movie industry-friendly responses to regurgitate. "There's no balance; it's entirely corporate driven, Electronic Frontier Foundation attorney Wendy Seltzer told WIRED. "If anything, it's an exercise in how efficiently you can brainwash students."
