o Senate Bill Would Strengthen Counterfeiting Laws to Include Movies, Music

Washington -- A new bill introduced into the U.S. Senate on Tuesday by
Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) would strengthen U.S. counterfeit laws to
include the counterfeiting of authentication features, such as holograms
and watermarks embedded into the packaging of CDs, software and motion
pictures. "The rising theft of American intellectual property, through
piracy and counterfeiting, has cost hundreds of thousands of American
jobs. It has cost the U.S. government tax revenues and U.S. corporations
billions of dollars," said Senator Biden, in a statement. "The criminal
code has not kept up with the counterfeiting operations of today's
high-tech pirates, and it's time to make sure that it does." In addition
to giving movies and music the same anti-counterfeiting protection enjoyed
by the software industry, the bill would increase penalties for convicted
pirates. Sen. Biden's bill is one of several of late to address
intellectual property theft. Sen. Fritz Hollings (D-S.C.) recently
introduced a bill that would put government-mandated copy control
technologies into most consumer electronics devices.

San Diego -- Sony Online Entertainment on Thursday announced that it is

multiplayer online roleplaying game, "EverQuest." "EverQuest II" is slated

o Cable TV Industry Pledges to Aid Acceleration of Digital TV Transition

Washington -- Following the expiration of a mandate from the Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) that all TV stations begin broadcasting
digitally by Wednesday, the top 10 U.S. cable TV operators made a
commitment to accelerate the costly transition. The National Cable and
Telecommunications Association (NCTA), a cable industry trade group, sent
a letter to FCC Chairman Michael Powell stating that AT&T Broadband, AOL
Time Warner, Comcast, Charter, Cox, Adelphia, Cablevision, Mediacom,
Insight and CableOne will take a number of steps to accelerate the digital
TV transition. The companies said they will add at least five high
definition television channels to their offerings by January 1, 2003. In
addition, they will place orders for HDTV-ready set-top boxes and make
these available to customers who request them, and also actively market
both the channels and the devices to their subscribers. "Central to the
actions announced by the cable industry is our belief that the
availability of high definition television (HDTV) is key to create the
market incentive for American consumers to purchase digital TV receivers,"
said NCTA president and CEO Robert Sachs.
