o Sirius Signs Former MTV VJ Adam
Curry to Host Podcast Show
New York -- Sirius Satellite Radio announced on Monday that it
has signed former MTV VJ and "father of podcasting" Adam Curry to
produce a program on Sirius that will broadcast Curry's picks of the
world's best podcasts. Curry is also widely credited with developing
the first software used to record and distribute podcasts, or audio
files that can be automatically downloaded to an iPod or other MP3
player. Although "Adam Curry's PodShow" itself won't be a podcast,
the four-hour weekday program on Sirius' subscription-based
satellite radio service will include talk, comedy and undiscovered
music that amateur podcasters have created. The deal with Sirius
comes days after traditional radio broadcaster Infinity announced it
will launch the first terrestrial podcasting AM station in San
Francisco.

o Linkin Park
Wants Out of Warner Contract, Mentions Internet Distribution
New York -- Warner Music Group recording artists Linkin Park, in
announcing on Monday that they want to split with Warner over the
label's failure to share substantial profits from its planned IPO
with artists, hinted at the recent leaking of Fiona Apple's
unreleased record onto the Internet as a possible outcome for
unsuccessful negotiations. "Possible avenues include relying more on
touring, merchandising and endorsements, rather than leaving their
future in the hands of a weakened WMG. Recently, new Fiona Apple
music was released on the Internet for free," the band said, in a
statement. Linkin Park has sold more than 35 million records over
the past five years -- representing 10% of all Warner sales. "We
feel a responsibility to get great music to our fans. Unfortunately,
we believe that we can't accomplish that effectively with the
current Warner Music," the band said.

o Games
Industry Sees Malaysia as Piracy Haven; Named to U.S. Watch List
Washington -- The Acting U.S. Trade Representative has added
Malaysia to its "watch list" of countries viewed as havens for
piracy, an action applauded by a video game industry that sees the
nation as the top distributor of pirated games. "Malaysia is the
primary source of pirated optical disc entertainment software in the
world," said Douglas Lowenstein, president of the ESA video game
trade group. "Exports of pirated entertainment software produced in
Malaysia have been seized in over 20 countries on five continents."
Malaysia was identified in a Special 301 Report issued by Acting
USTR Peter Allgeier. Other countries on various U.S. piracy watch
lists include China, Russia, Thailand and Ukraine.

o Vivendi,
Valve Settle Lawsuit Over Video Game Distribution Rights
Bellevue, Wash. -- Valve Software, the video game developer
behind popular multiplayer online titles including "Half-Life" and
"Counter-Strike," announced that it has settled the lawsuit it
brought against Vivendi Universal over the distribution rights to
its titles. Under the terms, Vivendi will cease distributing its
re-packaged versions of Valve's games at retailers; Valve operates
its own online game distribution technology. Vivendi will also void
any licenses it granted to cybercafés, which may then re-sign to
offer the game through Valve.

o Study:
Excessive Graphics Keep Viewers from Understanding News
Manhattan, Kan. -- Graphics such as scrolling news make it more
difficult for TV viewers to understand what's being said by news
anchors, according to a new study by research firm Newslab in
collaboration with a pair of Kansas State University journalism and
mass communications professors. "Our conclusion has been that if you
want people to understand the news better, then get that stuff off
the screen," said Tom Grimes, one of the professors. "The outcome of
all of the experiments was that people were splitting their
attention into too many parts to understand any of the content."
Grimes said that subjects tended to remember 10% fewer facts when
the screen was filled with such graphics as scrolling headlines and
sports scores, compared with a screen that was free of the graphics.
