o Report: 2005 Online Advertising Projected to Rise 23% to $14.7 Billion

Cambridge, Mass. -- Total U.S. online advertising and marketing spending is expected to reach $14.7 billion this year, a 23% increase over 2004 numbers, and is forecasted to account for 8% of all ad spending in 2010 -- rivaling the amount spent on cable TV and radio ads, according to a report from Massachusetts-based Forrester Research. Almost half of marketers plan to decrease spending on magazine, newspaper and direct mail ads while increasing their online ad spending, Forrester said. "Despite significant changes in consumer behavior, there is a large disparity between the amount of time consumers are spending online and the money marketers are spending trying to reach them online," said Forrester analyst Charlene Li. Of marketers surveyed, 64% reported interest in advertising on blogs, as well as through RSS feeds (57%) and cell phones (52%). Forrester predicts search engine marketing will grow 33% this year, and will reach $11.6 billion in 2010; 78% of marketers surveyed said they think search ads will be more effective than traditional ads within three years.

o Competing Media, Telemarketing Rules Hurt Newspaper Circulation

Vienna, Va. -- With a growing number of people getting their news from the Internet and cable TV, newspaper circulation continues to decline, according to new figures from the Newspaper Association of America. In the six months ending March 31, the average daily circulation for the nation's 814 reporting newspapers fell 1.9% to 47.4 million. The NAA also said that the National Do-Not-Call Registry has hurt sales, forcing papers to use means other than telemarketing to secure new subscribers. "Of all the things that have happened, (the change in telemarketing rules) had the single largest impact," John Kimball, the NAA's chief marketing officer, told The Washington Post. He said that while newspapers previously had relied on telemarketing to secure 60%-65% of its subscribers, that figure has now dropped by about 10%.

Stuff that if I went to church on Sunday and came home and wanted to play a video game, I kind of felt a little bit guilty about it," Bagley, who founded a Christian game studio called N'Lightning, told The Times.
