o Report: Digital TV Receiver Sales
Up 50% in 2004
Boston -- Manufacturers sold a record 49.3 million digital TV
receivers worldwide in 2004, a 50% increase in unit volume and 70%
jump in revenue growth over the previous year, according to a report
from market research firm Strategy Analytics. Sales for 2005 are
expected to grow a further 38% to 68.2 million units. New digital
terrestrial TV, IPTV services and the looming U.S.
government-mandated digital conversion will be key drivers of device
sales over the next five years, the firm projected, with annual
sales forecasted to reach 181.3 million units and $39.1 billion in
retail revenue by 2010. By then, North America will account for 65%
of all digital TV sales, while Asia-Pacific will account for 19% and
Europe 14%. The firm's data includes sales of both digital TV
set-top boxes and integrated digital TVs.

o Mobile
Operators Say Anti-Piracy Software Royalties Still Too High
London -- A global trade association of mobile network operators
said on Wednesday that lowered licensing fees for cell phone
anti-piracy software are still too expensive. MPEG LA, which
represents companies like Sony and Philips that hold patents on cell
phone digital rights management, cut its proposed tariffs on the
technology by one-third after complaints from the GSM Association.
The mobile networks argued that the initial $1 per phone surcharge
on anti-piracy software would cost more than the projected annual
revenue from sales of all downloaded content protected by the
software. In a statement, the GSM Association called on alternate
providers of digital rights management technology to put forward
competing schemes for evaluation. "It's clear that the revised
proposal remains unreasonable and unworkable -- but we are confident
that MPEG LA will continue to respond to market feedback," said Rob
Conway, CEO of the GSM Association.

o Report: Apple
iPod Shuffle Ups Flash-Based Player Market Share to 58%
London -- The iPod Shuffle, Apple's flash memory-based digital
music player, accounted for 58% of all flash-based MP3 players sold
in April, up from 43% in February, according to a Merrill Lynch
report citing NPD sales that was reported on U.K. news site The
Register. The data indicates Apple's hard drive-based iPod commands
90% of that MP3 player market segment, while its iTunes Music Store
sells 70% of all downloads purchased in the U.S. The report also
found that the iPod accounts for 40% of the MP3 player market in
Japan.

o Nielsen to
Integrate "Top Swaps" P2P Download Data from BigChampagne
Beverly Hills, Calif. -- Media ratings provider Nielsen
Entertainment on Wednesday announced a partnership with Big
Champagne, to integrate the company's peer-to-peer file-sharing
network monitoring data into Nielsen radio airplay ratings. The
addition will place data on "top swaps" alongside Nielsen's radio
airplay data on the company's BDSRadio.com -- to provide record
labels, artists and radio stations with a new source of information
on music trends. "The linkage of Nielsen Entertainment's Actionable
Entertainment Intelligence in music with Big Champagne's P2P charts
is the beginning of a broader new landscape we plan to map,
detailing the interrelationship between technology and consumption,"
said Nielsen Entertainment president and CEO Andrew Wing. Beverly
Hills, Calif.-based BigChampagne's data is culled from monitoring
P2P networks like Kazaa, and is also syndicated by Entertainment
Weekly and E! Entertainment Television.
