o U.S. House Judiciary Subcommittee Approves Internet Gambling Ban

Washington - The U.S. House Judiciary subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security on Wednesday approved a bill that would ban Internet gambling in the U.S., Reuters reported. The bill would make it a crime for online casinos to accept payments from credit cards, checks, and wire or Internet transfers. "Virtual betting parlors have attempted to avoid the application of United States law by locating themselves offshore and out of our jurisdictional reach," said the bill's author, Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.). The bill now moves before the full House Judiciary Committee.

o CBS Launches "Innertube" Ad-Supported Free Broadband Channel

Los Angeles - CBS on Thursday launched "Innertube," an ad-supported broadband channel on CBS.com that will offer both original Web series and the network's TV programming for free. Initially, innertube will offer a rotating selection of three shows each day, including "Greek to Chic," "BBQ Bill," "Animate This!" and "Beyond Survivor". Innertube will soon offer episodes of shows that were cancelled before their on-air seasons finished, such as "Fire Me…Please" and "Love Monkey." CBS did not say when it plans to begin offering episodes of primetime series for free streaming. "Our company possesses some of the world's finest entertainment programming assets and brands, and we will continue on a strategic course to find as many distribution channels and new revenue streams for them as possible," said CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves. "With this broadband channel, we've essentially bypassed cable and created a general entertainment outlet utilizing existing creative and content resources." CBS rival ABC has already launched a similar service that offers free streaming episodes of shows including "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" that feature embedded, un-skippable commercials. NBC, which offers "Today" and "Meet the Press" for free online, and Fox have also announced plans to offer ad-supported broadband channels.

o Sony Delays Release of Blu-ray Disc Movie Titles by One Month

Los Angeles - Sony Home Entertainment has announced that it will delay the release of its first titles on its parent company's Blu-ray Disc format from May 23 until June 20, when the first Blu-Ray DVD players are available in stores. The Samsung BD-P100, the first consumer Blu-ray player, is expected to be released on June 25. Sony Home Entertainment president Benjamin Feingold said the delay was announced "in an effort to ensure a more coordinated launch." The first players and movie titles utilizing Toshiba's rival HD DVD format have already hit the market. o RIAA Identifies 12 U.S. Cities as "Piracy Hot-Spots"

Washington - The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on Thursday named 12 U.S. "priority" cities that feature "savvy multi-state criminal operations" making and distributing pirated CDs. The RIAA estimated domestic CD piracy losses at $300 million, adding that more than 5 million pirated music products were seized and 3,300 arrests made last year. The RIAA will step up law enforcement training and commit additional investigative resources in the following cities in the coming year: Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Providence, San Diego and San Francisco. "As the pirate music trade continues to evolve, criminals are enhancing their products and attempting to dupe consumers with illegal CDs that look authentic," said Brad Buckles, executive vice president of anti-piracy for the RIAA. "Today's sophisticated pirate trade demands even greater awareness and action from us, our partners in the music community, law enforcement and music fans."

o New Red Hot Chili Peppers Album Leaked Online

Los Angeles - "Flea," bass player for The Red Hot Chili Peppers, has urged fans in a website posting not to download a "poor sound quality" version of the band's upcoming album "Stadium Arcadium" that has leaked onto file-sharing sites. "I think it is a fair deal for everyone, and for people to just steal a poor sound quality version of it for free because some a**hole stole it and put it on the Internet is sad to me," Flea wrote on the band's site. The band's spokeswoman told Reuters that the source of the leak was being tracked down, which could have come from a journalist, or from someone involved in the recording or manufacturing process. If caught, the source would be subject to a new federal law that punishes pre-release leaks with up to 11 years in prison.
