o BearShare File-Sharing Network
to Shut Down, Pay Labels $30 Million
Los Angeles - Free Peers, the company behind the BearShare
peer-to-peer file-sharing service, has agreed to shut down and pay
the record labels a $30 million settlement to avoid copyright
infringement claims, the Associated Press reported on Friday. Under
the terms of the settlement, which must still be approved by a
judge, BearShare will also sell its technology, user data and domain
name to a unit of iMesh, another file-sharing service that settled
with the labels and now offers a legitimate music service. Financial
terms of the sale were not disclosed. BearShare was one of seven
targets of letters sent by the Recording Industry Association of
America (RIAA) after the Supreme Court ruled providers of
file-sharing software were liable for copyright infringement. Fellow
RIAA letter recipients i2Hub and WinMX have also since shut down,
while Warez P2P, Limewire, eDonkey and Soulseek continue normal
operations.

o Music Industry,
Digital Retailers Team to Improve Tracking of Song Sales
Paris - The major record labels have partnered with
several performing rights organizations and big technology firms to
develop more comprehensive tracking of digital media sales. In
addition to Sony BMG, Warner Music, EMI and Universal, the Digital
Data Exchange (DDEX) is backed by ASCAP and other performing rights
organizations and royalty collection societies, as well as Apple,
Microsoft and RealNetworks. The companies are collaborating on a
standard means of identifying each digital song through its
metadata, so that sales of songs from each label through services
like iTunes and Rhapsody may be reported and tallied in a uniform
manner. The group said a number of music rights societies have
already begun testing some of its standards.

Networks president and COO Michael Wolf. Participants will be able
to see e-mails, IM logs, pictures, music playlists, recently viewed

o College
Social Network Facebook Expands to Include Work Networks
Palo Alto, Calif. - Facebook, a social networking site
frequented mostly by college students, said on Thursday that it has
expanded to include work networks. In fact, the company said that it
now supports more than 1,000 work networks, and is now allowing
alumni and those from supported companies to register for the
service with authenticated ".com" or ".org" email addresses, instead
of just an address from a supported college or high school. "The
number one request we receive from people is to have the ability to
invite friends outside their college network," said Mark Zuckerberg,
the company's founder and CEO. Facebook said that the move is
necessary, since one third of its college users will graduate this
year. Launched in early 2004, Facebook allows users to create a
profile and share information, photos and interests with
authenticated users from defined networks.

Islamic Militant Video Game "Mods" Make U.S. Bad Guys
Washington - lThe U.S. Defense Department reports that it
has discovered militant websites where popular combat video games
have been modified so that young Muslim players can virtually take
up arms against U.S. soldiers, Reuters reported. Electronic Arts'
"Battlefield 2" is among the games for which tech-savvy militants
have developed such "mods". "What we have seen is that any video
game that comes out ... they'll modify it and change the game for
their needs," said Defense Department public diplomacy specialist
Dan Devlin. "I was just a boy when the infidels came to my village
in Blackhawk helicopters," a narrator's voice says in the modded
version of "Battlefield 2," which also features an inserted
recording of George W. Bush's statement from Sept. 16, 2001: "This
crusade, this war on terrorism, is going to take a while."
