o Report: Sony's Next PlayStation Console Coming in 2005

Tokyo -- Sony is currently developing the next generation in its line of
PlayStation video game consoles, which is due to be released sometime in
2005, the Associated Press reported. The AP quoted a story from Kyodo News
agency, which referred to sources within Sony. The device will reportedly
be based on a chip 200 times faster than the one used in the current
PlayStation model, which Sony will spend $400 million to develop. The next
PlayStation will also function without the need for game discs, operating
instead over high speed, fiber-optic networks and allowing for gamers to
challenge one another online.

o Microsoft Releases TV Interactive Program Guide

New Orleans -- Microsoft on Monday introduced new interactive program
guide technology that is compatible with set-top boxes made by Motorola.
The news was announced at Cable 2002, the National Cable and
Telecommunications Association's (NCTA) annual convention taking place
this week in New Orleans. The Microsoft TV IPG will compete with the guide
offered by Gemstar-TV Guide International, which is currently partnered
with Liberate Technologies, Microsoft's rival in set-top box operating
system software. Microsoft also released an upgrade to its set-top box
software, Microsoft TV Advanced 2.0, which now includes integrated video
on demand and support for enhanced digital video recording features.

o Study: Over Half of Internet Users Access Streaming Media

New Orleans -- More than half (56 percent) of Internet users access
streaming media, and 27 percent said they are very or somewhat likely to
pay a transaction fee to view full-length movies on their PC, according to
a report released on Monday by the Cable and Telecommunications
Association for Marketing (CTAM). The report is based on a survey of 771
U.S. consumers who had used the Internet recently. Other findings include
that at least one out of five consumers said they are very or somewhat
likely to pay for music (23 percent) or live sports events (20 percent) on
the Internet. "With high speed Internet access becoming more popular and
mainstream, the Internet is turning into a major delivery mechanism for
entertainment and information that was once reserved for television," said
Jinling Elliott, CTAM vice president of research.
