o Study: Video Game Industry Contributes Over $18 Billion to U.S. Economy

Washington - The video game industry contributed $18 billion to the nation's economy in 2004, both directly through $8 billion in game sales and indirectly through 144,000 full-time industry jobs, according to a study authored by Dr. Robert Crandall of the Brookings Institution and Prof. J. Gregory Sidak of the Georgetown University Law Center, and funded by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). Sales of games for consoles, the PC, mobile and online platforms were $8.2 million in 2004 and are expected to reach $15 billion in 2010, while full-time industry jobs are projected to increase from 144,000 in 2004 to over 250,000 by 2009. In addition to providing entertainment, the study noted that the video game industry has accelerated technological innovations in areas like central processing units for consoles, which are also used by defense and medical companies; games are also being used by companies for training, education and productivity. "Clearly, the entertainment software industry is not just about 'fun and games.' It is a serious business that improves training, efficiency, and productivity in a variety of industries and has led to innovation in other high-technology industries. Video games play an important role in maintaining U.S. leadership in information technology, which is critical to the future success of the U.S. economy," the study concludes.
