o Warner Music Group IPO Raises $556
Million; Shares Fall 7%
New York -- Shares of Warner Music Group fell more than 7% on
their first day of trading, debuting at $17 and then falling to
$15.75 before stabilizing in an initial public offering that raised
about $556 million. The stock had been expected to debut at around
$22 a share, but analysts cited an unclear future for the record
label in the realm of digital music, as well as a public dispute
with top-selling artists Linkin Park as fuel for the downturn. "When
the vast majority of your sales are physical CD sales and the market
is moving away from physical sales, your revenue model and how you
alter your cost structure to adapt to that new revenue model are
unknown," Fulcrum Global Partners analyst Richard Greenfield told
Reuters. The smallest of the world's four major record labels was
taken public by a group of investors led by former Seagram CEO Edgar
Bronfman Jr., who acquired the label from Time Warner for $2.6
billion. There is some speculation the company may seek a merger
with U.K.-based EMI, which would further narrow the market from four
major record labels to only two.

o RealNetworks
Acquires Finnish Mobile Game Publisher Mr.Goodliving
Seattle -- RealNetworks, a developer of media delivery
technologies, on Wednesday announced its entry into the mobile games
market with its $15 million acquisition of Finland-based mobile game
publisher Mr.Goodliving. In addition to mobile games such as
"Trivial Pursuit" and "Playman Sports," Mr.Goodliving developed
Emerge, a mobile game development platform that supports publishing
to more than 200 handsets in 20 languages. Seattle-based
RealNetworks said it plans to convert the library of casual games it
has established with its RealArcade service into mobile titles using
Emerge. The company also said it named Mr.Goodliving managing
director Juha Ruskola as the head of Real's games business in
Europe, Middle-East and Africa.

o Toshiba
Disputes Reports of Deal with Sony on Next-Generation DVD Format
Tokyo -- Japanese consumer electronics maker Toshiba has issued a
statement retreating from reports that it is close to an agreement
with Sony, which developed a rival next-generation DVD standard to
compete with its own, to combine the two formats. Reuters and others
reported on Tuesday that Sony and Toshiba were close to a deal that
would see Sony's Blu-ray figure more prominently than Toshiba's HD
DVD in a merged format. "Toshiba believes a single format for next
generation DVD is most beneficial for consumers, and we are actively
participating in talks towards format unification," the company said
in a statement. "At this point however, nothing has been decided,
and absolutely no decision has been made for unification on any
basis. The indication that a unification agreement on the basis of a
0.1mm disc system is imminent is unfounded and erroneous." The
company also yesterday announced the development of a new,
higher-capacity 45GB HD DVD disc format, as well as a double-sided
format that can hold HD content on one-side and standard definition
content on the other -- adding that Universal plans to release
movies on the new discs.

o Report:
Minorities Spend Nearly Twice as Much on Video Games
Somerset, N.J. -- Minorities spend almost twice as much as
Caucasians on video games, with Asians spending the most and
Caucasians the least overall, according to a report from market
research firm Phoenix Marketing International. The survey of over
18,000 Americans found that gamers spend an average of $34 per month
on video games, hardware and accessories, with those who prefer
"shooter" games spending the most ($50), followed by the "real-time
strategy" and "sports" games categories. One in four of those
surveyed said they plan to purchase a Sony PSP in the near future,
with African-Americans and Asians being the most likely to have
already purchased a PSP, while Caucasians were found to be both the
least likely to have already purchased a PSP, or to be planning to
