o Report: U.S. Online Gamblers
Doubled in 2005; Only 19% Think It's Illegal
Washington - The number of online gamblers in the U.S.
doubled in 2005, to nearly four percent of the country's population,
according to a report conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates
for the American Gaming Association (AGA). Online gambling generated
$12 billion in revenue during 2005, about half of which came from
U.S. residents betting on gambling sites situated overseas; it is
illegal to operate online casinos in the U.S. In fact, despite the
Justice Dept.'s contention that it is illegal for Americans to place
bets online, only 19% of U.S. online gamblers polled believed the
practice was illegal. Seventy percent of those polled said they
began gambling online within the past two years. A U.S. House
Judiciary subcommittee last week approved a bill that would ban
Internet gambling in the U.S.; the bill will soon be taken up by the
full House Judiciary Committee. Meanwhile, the AGA report said
gambling revenue at U.S. brick-and-mortar casinos grew 5% in 2005,
to a record $30.3 billion.

o Bill Would Ban
Minors' Access to Social Networks at Schools, Libraries
San Francisco - House Republicans have introduced a bill
that would prohibit minors' access to social networking sites at
schools and libraries, CNET News.com reported. The Deleting Online
Predators Act (DOPA), authored by Rep. Michael Fitzpatrick (R-Penn.)
and backed by House Speaker Dennis Hastert, would ban students'
access to sites that let them create personal profiles and that
feature chat rooms and other forms of online communication that can
subject them to sexual advances. "We've all heard stories of
children on some of these social Web sites meeting up with dangerous
predators," said Rep. Hastert. "This legislation adds another layer
of protection." The director of the American Library Association's
office of government relations, Lynne Bradley, told CNET News.com
that librarians are "as protective of kids as any other protection
in this whole field, but we do know there are legitimate uses (of
social-networking sites)." Some schools already block access to
sites like MySpace, Facebook and Friendster, prompting enterprising
students to take elaborate steps like setting up online proxies to
their home computers, which allow them to bypass filters and access
the social networks from school computers.

o Traffic to
Social Networking Sites Grows 47% from a Year Ago
New York - The popularity of social networking sites
continued to grow in April, according to new figures from Nielsen//NetRatings.
The firm said that traffic to the top 10 social networking sites
collectively grew 47% from the same time in 2005, reaching a total
of 68.8 million unique visitors, or 45% of active web users in the
U.S. MySpace, which has attracted significant media attention of
late, topped the list (38.4 million unique visitors), followed by
Blogger, Classmates Online and YouTube. "Social networking is not a
fad that will disappear," said Jon Gibs, senior director of media
for Nielsen//NetRatings. "If anything, it will become more ingrained
in mainstream sites, just as reality TV programming has become
ubiquitous in network programming."

o ICANN Votes
Against Creation of .XXX Web Domain for Pornography
Marina del Rey, Calif. - The Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has voted against a proposal to
create a special .xxx domain for adult entertainment, the Associated
Press reported. The proposal faced opposition from conservative
groups, who said it lacked teeth because pornography sites would
still be able to maintain their .com addresses, instead of being
relegated to the .xxx domain. The pornography industry was also
against the proposal because it would potentially allow governments
to more easily filter speech protected by the First Amendment in the
U.S.
