o Microsoft Unveils Xbox 360
Next-Generation Video Game Console
Redmond, Wash. -- Microsoft last night unveiled its Xbox 360
next-generation video game console -- a white box with a 20GB hard
drive and DVD player that can either lay flat or stand upright --
during an MTV special hosted by Elijah Wood. Microsoft will beat
both Sony and Nintendo to market with Xbox 360, which is slated for
release in North America in November, and in Europe and Japan by the
end of the year. Nintendo's "Revolution" and Sony's next PlayStation
are expected to be released some time in 2006. Microsoft touted the
Xbox 360's high-definition graphics, and its ability to stream
high-definition TV and movies stored on a Media Center PC to a
television. The company will provide a free version of its Xbox Live
online gaming service, in addition to a subscription version that
enables multiplayer gaming and includes a USB camera accessory
option. Game titles scheduled for release at launch include 2K
Sports' "NBA 2K6"; Activision's "Call of Duty 2" and "Tony Hawk's
American Wasteland"; id Software's "Quake 4"; Electronic Arts'
"Madden NFL 06," "Need for Speed Most Wanted" and "Tiger Woods PGA
Tour 06"; Majesco's "The Darkness"; Microsoft Game Studios' "Perfect
Dark: Zero," "Kameo: Elements of Power," "Project Gotham Racing 3"
and "Gears of War"; THQ's "Saint's Row"; and Ubisoft's "Ghost Recon
3."

o MPAA Targets
TV Show File-Sharing Sites With Copyright Lawsuits
Los Angeles -- The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)
announced that it has filed copyright infringement lawsuits against
six BitTorrent file-sharing websites where users trade episodes of
TV shows. "Every television series depends on other
markets-syndication, international sales -- to earn back the
enormous investment required to produce the comedies and dramas we
all enjoy and those markets are substantially hurt when that content
is stolen. On these sites, anyone in the world can download entire
television seasons in a single click," said MPAA CEO Dan Glickman.
BitTorrent sites targeted by the MPAA's actions included ShunTV,
Zonatracker, Btefnet, Scifi-Classics, CDDVDHeaven and Bragginrights.
The MPAA has already targeted operators of BitTorrent servers in
Europe where users traded full-length movies, resulting in arrests
and, according to the MPAA, a 40% decrease in BitTorrent servers.
"Since we began shutting these sites down, the time that it takes to
download a file on BitTorrent has increased exponentially," added
Glickman.

o Report: U.S.
Video Game Sales Up 9% to $342 Million in April
San Francisco -- U.S. video game sales were up 9% to $342 million
in April, according to data from market research firm NPD Group
cited by analysts in a Reuters news report. Strong sales of games
for Sony's PSP helped bolster a console games market that saw a 2%
decrease; game hardware sales also dropped 6% in April. Analysts
cited the upcoming release of next-generation consoles from Sony,
Microsoft and Nintendo for the meager increase in game sales. Top
sellers for the month were Take-Two's "Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition"
and Activision's "Doom 3."

o CEA:
Broadcasters Must Embrace HDTV or Face Obsolescence
Arlington, Va. -- Broadcasters must either embrace
high-definition TV or face obsolescence, Gary Shapiro, the president
and CEO of the Arlington-based Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)
told government and industry officials Wednesday in DC. Shapiro's
remarks come at a time when Congress, the FCC and the industry
debate how to define the end of the nation's transition to digital
television. Legislation to set a hard cut-off date for analog
broadcast is widely expected to be introduced in this current
session of Congress. "Who will be disenfranchised and not receive a
TV signal after the cut-off has been a major concern for all
involved in the transition," said Shapiro. "Recent figures from CEA
show the percentage of American homes that rely only on an
over-the-air signal is low and shrinking. Currently 87% of homes
have access to cable or satellite." Even though their very existence
is at stake, Shapiro said that few broadcasters have moved to truly
leverage the opportunities DTV provides and even fewer have made
efforts to promote their unique status to the public.

o Yahoo Served
With $10 Million Child Porn Lawsuit
Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Yahoo has been sued for $10 million by a minor
and his parents who allege the company knew child pornography was
being offered on its servers, Reuters reported. A Yahoo Group called
"Candyman," set up by co-defendant Mark Bates, was online for two
months before Yahoo took it down in February 2001. In connection
with an FBI investigation into certain Yahoo users, Bates pleaded
guilty in 2002 to creating the Candyman site. The minor plaintiff
suing Yahoo, "Johnny Doe," alleges a neighbor took pornographic
pictures of him that ended up on Bates' site. However, the
Communications Decency Act generally protects service providers such
as Yahoo from prosecution for illegal content posted by users,
provided they have no knowledge of the content. "Unless the
plaintiff has very concrete proof that Yahoo knew that this group
contained child pornography, it's very likely that Yahoo will not be
liable," John Morris, staff counsel at the Center for Democracy and
Technology, told Reuters.

o Google
Acquires Mobile Social Networking Site Dodgeball
Mountain View, Calif. -- Google has acquired Dodgeball, a social
networking site that lets users connect to friends using cell phone
text messages, according to a note on the Dodgeball website. Google
spokesman David Krane confirmed the purchase to CNET News.com, but
did not provide financial details of the deal. "We talked to a lot
of different angel investors and venture capitalists, but no one
really 'got' what we were doing -- that is until we met Google,"
Dodgeball's two co-founders wrote, on their site, adding that the
sale will enable them to continue working on new service features.
Google has already launched a beta version of its own social
networking service, called Orkut.

o Nokia
Publishes Specifications for Mobile TV Interface
Helsinki -- Finnish mobile-phone company Nokia announced that it has
made air interface specifications for its mobile TV services
publicly available. The Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld-based
service specifies how mobile TV terminals interconnect with the
network and makes it easier for operators and service providers to
roll out mobile TV services. "Operators and service providers want
to know how the interoperability of terminals from different vendors
can be ensured," said Nokia spokesman Richard Sharp. "By making this
interface specification public, we are emphasizing our commitment to
open standards and interoperability as a means to enable positive
market development."

o NTL Broadcast
and O2 to Trial Mobile TV Service in England
Oxford, England -- NTL Broadcast and U.K.-based mobile operator O2
announced that they plan to test run Britain's first mobile TV
service in July. The companies said the six-month trial, which will
investigate how people use the service, would provide a wide range
of programs from 16 different channels, including shows from the
Discovery Channel, CNN, the Cartoon Network and a short-film channel
called Shorts International. The service employs the DVB-H
transmission standard, which has been developed for the broadcast of
TV signals on mobiles and other handheld devices. While NTL and O2
research shows that more than half of U.K. mobile users are very
interested in watching TV programs on their mobiles, the companies
admit that they are still unsure how people will use the services.

Raleigh, N.C. -- Epic Games, a PC game publisher and developer of
the Unreal video game physics engine, announced this week that it
has acquired the Reality Engine, a competing game engine technology,
from Artificial Studios. Financial terms of the deal were not
disclosed. North Carolina-based Epic plans to discontinue sales of
the Reality Engine, but will review its technologies for inclusion
in its own Unreal Engine; it also offered current Reality users
"significantly discounted prices" on Unreal. Separately, Epic
announced on Friday that Korean online game developer NCsoft has
