o Microsoft Sets November 8 Release Date for $299 Xbox

Los Angeles -- Microsoft announced on Wednesday that its Xbox video game
console will be shipped to retail outlets on November 8th and sold for a
suggested retail price of $299 -- the same price Sony is currently asking
for its rival PlayStation 2 console. Sega is among 27 companies designing
games for Xbox that will take advantage of its ability to connect to the
Internet. Microsoft has also partnered with Warner Bros. and Universal
Interactive Services to create movie-related titles. The company will
release three games based on Steven Spielberg's upcoming film "A.I.,"
which Microsoft says are "considered interactive sequels to the movie."
Two will be released along with the console in November. Microsoft will
also develop a game for Universal based on the films of martial arts actor
Bruce Lee.

o Nintendo to Release GameCube 3 Days Before Microsoft's Xbox

Los Angeles -- Nintendo announced on Wednesday that it will release its
GameCube video game console in the U.S. on November 5th -- three days
before Microsoft is due to ship its own Xbox console to retailers.
GameCube will be available in Japan beginning September 14th. The company
did not release pricing information, and is not expected to announce such
details at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), which kicks off in Los
Angeles on Thursday. Microsoft has priced its Xbox at $299 to match what
Sony is charging for its PlayStation 2. GameCube titles will be written on
DVD discs instead of silicon-based cartridges, which means that games for
older Nintendo consoles like its Nintendo 64 cannot be played on the
GameCube. Sony's PlayStation 2, by contrast, plays all the original
PlayStation titles, as well as DVDs and CDs. Nintendo contracted
electronics manufacturer Matsushita to develop encryption for the GameCube
DVDs that is stronger than the current industry standard and easily-hacked
CSS (Content Scramble System).

o RealNetworks, Macromedia Software to Accompany Sony PlayStation 2

Los Angeles -- Sony announced on Wednesday that media player software
developed by RealNetworks and Macromedia will be implemented into its
Internet-connected PlayStation 2 (PS2) video game console. Seattle-based
RealNetworks' RealPlayer and Macromedia's FLASH program will be loaded
onto future shipments of the PS2. The software will allow PS2 gamers who
connect to the Internet to access streaming audio and video. It will also
allow Sony to update any streaming advertisements it embeds into PS2
games, as FLASH and RealPlayer software are two of the current methods
used to deliver ads to websites. Sony also announced that it will
implement new Internet protocol (IP) technology developed by Cisco Systems
that will address the inevitable shortage of IP addresses currently being
created by the growing number of non-PC, Internet-connected devices.

o Streaming Media Services Firm Eyecast Lays Off 50% of Staff

Herndon, Va. -- Eyecast, a provider of streaming media services for
businesses, has laid off about 50 percent of its staff of 65, VentureWire
reported on Wednesday. The company said it is realigning its business in
light of current market conditions. Eyecast's latest layoffs follow a
round in March when it laid off 30 workers -- at the time about a quarter
of its staff -- and a round in January that also terminated about 30
employees. Virginia-based Eyecast provides Web-based security video
monitoring of corporate facilities.
